Manual

Post by alarconlujan »

Hello all,
Well, just to ask the group a pair of things. Fiart of all, i
have the Haynes manual for Hondas 360 & 600 series (both N, Z..) and
i scanned some photos. As a out of print book, it may be hard to find
for many owners or restorers which have one of those cars (of course
i was hard to find for me too), so i have an idea that is to open a
new photo album with some of the haynes manual photos for the
enthusiastic, restorers and owners. Finally, for those who have a
manual could be a great idea to share them. Do you have one? What do
you thing?
Cheers

Fernando,
I hate to bust your bubble here, but at best the Haynes manual for
the Honda 600 is junk. I have one myself and it is terrible.
Finally, I found a genuine HONDA shop manual and they are wonderful.
My experience is that foriegn shop manuals are much better than
American shop manuals.....As long as it is the manual put out by the
manufacturer.

Hayne's manuals are good for proping the leg on your wobbly table.
They sell really well on eBay usually $35.00 or so, don't know why.
You can still get the Original Coupe Shop Manual & Owners Manuals at
http://www.helminc.com Someone eMailed me some time ago and said they
were going to get Hayne's to burn a bunch of copies on a CD ROM.
Hayne's is located in England.

Re: Hayne's Manuals

I have found some of the illustrations in Haynes helpful from time to time.
I have a shop manual and parts catalog also. Between the three I can usually
find the answer I need.

Re: Hayne's Manuals

Post by aahondaowner »

A real look at the Haynes Honda 360, 600 & Z coupe' manual
provides a good supplement to the factory "Honda 360/400/600 Sedan
and Van Manual" when it too is used with the "Honda Z360, 600 Coupe
Shop Manual". None of the manuals gave both the full synchro and
constant transmission descriptions. While the Coupe manual showed
the full synchro trans. it missed the constant transmission. Many
USA owners view the Haynes manual as deficient because it states it
covers both Sedan and Coupe models, which is true for early Honda 600
Sedan's and if the Coupe was sold in France. Engine numbers there
for the Coupe were N600E-2000001 and on up, the second number "0"
denoting a constant transmission. While the engine numbers for Coupe
600 models made for the good old USA were N600E-25000001 and up, the
second number "5" denoting a full synchro transmission. This was
the same with the early USA Sedan's who's numbers started with N600E-
1013055 the second number "0" again denoting a constant
transmission. And in April of 1971 (along with the start of the
Z600 Coupe production) came the series "B" Honda 600 Sedan Chassis
number NXXX-XXX-XXXX with an engine number N600E-15000001 which engine
numbering ran through the end of N and Z 600 production. Again
the "5" denoting a full synchro transmission.
Other unique features of the Haynes manual are it's descriptions of
wear points and although the numbering of photographs are some times
misleading and a picture or two copied from Honda reversed. Much of
the book is useful to supplement either of the Honda Factory
manuals. If I were to list some of the discrepancies I have found it
would include:
- No mention of the full synchro transmission.
- No mention of the second generation Carburetor or gasktank
modifications.
- Pictured key points of reference numbered and not referred to in
the manuals' text. Issues such as spring lengths for the shift shaft
and reverse gear shaft lock balls not talked about. Which if
reversed can cause some bothersome problems.
- On page 12, in the general specifications the 600 Sedan and Coupe
are said to have two different compression ratios, which is wrong.
This is best described in the parts manual when ordering any of the
engine parts, pistons, cylinders, rings, head and valve train are all
the same numbers and interchangeable. Only the early Sedan heads
with its angle exhaust ports have a different part number.
- On page 14 the torque specifications are way off from Honda's
recommended specs.
- On page 17 picture 4.5 depicts the Hondamatic speedometer cable
attached but nothing is stated to this fact.
- Also on Page 14 Paragraph 4 line 4 states "disconnect the following
electrical leads" and when it picks up on page 17 the leads to the
brushes are missing along with the leads to the Fuel Solenoid.
- On page 25 there is a loosening sequence for the head bolts where
they missed the 6mm bolt under the intake manifold area of the cam
box. However the picture shows the N360 version of the two cylinder
engine with 4 domed nuts (without stating this) and states only two
are used on the 600 cc engine. It is easy to see who used the Haynes
manual when you open the cam box and see 4 domed nuts.
- The Oil pump rod is another problem, and although in the 1974
version of the Haynes manual it depicts the Oil pump Rod placement
correctly this time, it still speaks of the "oil grooves" positioned
toward the sprocket. (earlier issues of the manual showed the oil
pump rod positioned backward) The picture is not identified on page
26, which shows the grooves, nor is the picture 33.2 on page 43 of
much help when the oil pump is reversed.
- On page 117 and 122 along with the description on rebuilding the
rack and pinion steering box, miss the two stopper pinion bushings,
which can not be checked without removing the pinion bushings (top
and bottom, Honda didn't do much better with its illustrations
showing both bushings - really spacers - in the upper section of the
pinion housing).
Aside from these few problem areas the book has some redeeming issues
relating to the electrical adjustments, constant transmission trouble
shooting, Hondamatic rebuilding for the early engine, and many of the
pictures show areas that neither Honda manual did. So if you have a
wobbly table a new lag may be the best repair, I would have all three
to refer to and if you still don't get it, there are a few of us
around that have skinned our knuckle's on these unique and
interesting vehicles.

Message # 97 tells where you can buy an original Honda shop manual.
I bought mine off a guy that used to work on Honda 600s, and have no
idea where he bought the manual......Maybe from Honda.
Good luck.

Bill.  Do you accept Pay-Pal for the donation, or do you want a check?  I would love a copy of the CD.

Re: Manual

Post by dealadayray »

This is the scoop on the CD.  Its a Photo album which at times is hard to read.  It is not a copy or a outlet to copy publications owned by that company.  Helm publishing, I understand is still printing the Sedan Owners manual and the 360 600 Z Coupe shop manual.   I am told that another company is going to or has started printing the full version of the 360/400/600 Sedan and Van manual.  I do not know the price and I have not heard anything further on it in some time.
The Honda 600 Roster is a Free listing of Honda 600 owners all over the world, because it is free many are listed and few ask to be removed when their vehicles are sold.  It is in place to bring owners of these vehicles together so they can keep their cars on the road, exchanging or selling parts they do not need in their restorations.   The Roster still needs to stay in place so that we can someday know how many are left, running or valued only as parts cars.
This forum presents a very viable step toward uniting all Honda 600 owners to peace together a Bulletin Board that can assist every owner in the restoration of their vehicles.   Tell your story, What has been tried and failed to what succeeded  and how you did it, should all be placed on this net.   Already many of us are having parts refabricated or refurbished because Old Man Honda has closed the doors to many parts for these vehicles.   Some have said the cost of parts fabrication is expensive and the value of these cars does not warrant the cost.  Miles, Mike along with others have put out the necessary funding to make parts that will allow us to keep these cars on the road and they should be applauded for their efforts.
But all of us need to see what we can do to assist in the effort, where can we find the "O" ring that goes under the intake manifold, and why that manifolds' casting will crack if the wrong "O" ring is used.   Or why the interior rubber door handle cracks and breaks off?  It's because the wrong screw was used to attach it.  The original screw has only 6 threads and the remaining 1/2 inch or so of its length is smooth, which keeps the handle from being over stressed causing it to crack.
Thanks Miles, you have provided all of us with a rare opportunity.
