Tire question

Post by J.D.Long »

I know that the tire subject is just about ran into the ground, but on a post someone said that you can use RX7 rims.  Is there a certain year that must be used? Also, I would need to use 50 series tires?  Thanks for the info.

Tire question

Post by John »

Common reference for Honda 600 radials is 145SR10. What about the
Kumho 145/80R10 69T tire on the original standard sedan rims? Is that
a fit or is it for another rim?

145 SR 10 is the olden way they sized tires, same as 5.20 10 (bias
ply). The SR should be Speed Rated or Radial? or speed rated radial?
anyone? as if speed could be attained !
Motorcycle tires used to be such things as 350 x 18 or 375 x 18 (3
1/2" or 3 3/4" wide) but now they use some whacked out system I can't
understand. The tires on motorcycles read like this: 130/70v17 - How
am I supposed to figure that one out?
So, yes, 145/80-10 will fit the stock 10" rim.

Hi Miles,
New tires for cars also use this same system for tire sizes, here is how to break it down:
130 – Is the width across the tire at its widest point, usually the side walls.
70 – The height of the tire from the rim to the ground which in this case is 70% of the width of the tire or 39mm.
V – This the speed rating of the tire
17 – This is the rim size.
Hope that helps.

SR = S-rated radial. The S rating indicates that the tire is rated for a
maximum speed of 112 mph. The Kumho tire that John mentions has the newer
rating mark, 69T, which indicates that it is T-rated for speed (max 118
mph), and carries a load rating of 69 (capable of carrying 716 pounds at
the maximum inflation pressure).
IOW, a set of four 69T radials should be good for a 2850 lb car @ 118
mph. Overkill, I'd say, for the average N or Z.

Hi Miles--
The tire size change was a good one the first & second went
to "M.M" ( i guess?) and the last is still "Inches" So what would
an 18" rim be in "M.M" How about 130/70/5456.88? or some thing like
that I can not wait for the last change
