sand in your sandblaster. The powdered silica produced by the process is
actually quite dangerous. The professionals who use it require a full suit
with positive pressure hood. Instead, I bought some aluminum oxide, which
cost about $40, works great and is supposed to be much safer, only requires
a good filter mask. A 40 lb bag lasts a long time, BTW. Be sure to get lots
of tips, they wear out in an hour or so with a cheap syphon blaster at 90 psi.
I agree with the other responders, sandblasting will ruin your aluminum
finish, and don't do it with the engine assembled. If you disassemble the
engine, then just take it out to be parts-cleaned at your local garage. For
the experts at metal finishing go to your local hot rodders, bikes or cars.
A lot of places can do aluminum polishing, or re-anodizing, or even powder
coating.
My tip? Try the 3M plastic abrasive wheel for your angle grinder or drill.
It is cheap, lasts a long time, and does a great job.
