parts not needed anymore!

Post by riceburner006 »

I was thinking about those pesky rear mounts on the sedan and their
high failure rate! I rreplaced mine about 6 times with NOS mounts. On
my last motor change I used a coupe subframe,(thats all I had),and a
coupe rear mount! Never had a problem in years! riceburner006

Riceburner;
I agree, so I place a half inch chunk of rubber between the top and
bottom of the Sedan mount and they last for as long as I can remember.
The real problem is finding a shop that will rebuild our crank shafts.
I have a number that need rebuilding. Maybe a semi retired machinist would
be willing to set up a jig and rebuild them for ...
Anyone know of some one in that category? Just about everything else is
obtainable.

Bill,
Can you provide a little more information on what is required
to "rebuild" the crankshafts? I know a semi-retired machinist who can
make almost anything from a piece of steel or aluminum (he is really
very talented; makes a lot of custom billet parts for street rods
etc, and has made me some perfect replacement parts for my Trans Am)
He may have the time and the interest, and if so I could get an
estimate from him. Any idea how many the group might want done?

I think Miles could give a better description of the necessary tools, press,
alignment systems necessary to perform the job. It has to do with pulling
them apart, and putting two rods, center bearings, end bearings back
together for a balanced crank shaft. There are plenty of used crankshafts
around to pull apart. It is finding enough good parts left to make good
ones.

Hot-rod'd Honda (was Re: parts not needed anymore!)

We got a 600cc engine (open exhaust, minor porting and a mild performance cam) to around 37hp at the wheels.
Increasing the compression, getting it up to 700cc (not easy to do), adding fuel injection (and still open exhaust) got things up to almost 45hp at the wheels. After some tinkering I wouldn't be suprised if it's 50hp right now.
A new intake and better tuned exhaust (plus some good dyno tuning time) should get things close to (if not over) 60hp.
But really - why try to push these little cars? The 1hp/cid is pretty impressive to start with. If you want real performance, buy a modern car or do a transplant of an newer engine into some sort of older car . . . Honda Tuning (magazine) has some hot swaps every now and then that aren't all that expensive.

One of our sponsors tore one apart (we were looking to stroke it) - and they are pretty hard to get apart. He said he had to push his press really hard to do the job.
And there are no alignment holes like many multi-piece cranks have - so a good jig would be critical.

I pressed Two apart and was amazed how little pressure it took! They
come apart very easy. Also they are splined so I think alighnment
would be easy for an expert.

i guess what i meant was thatnot so much hot roddding one , which is cool,
but to just do minor things to see if you could get one better. ie port balance
it eetc. just to see if yo ucan get it better with out pushing it to much. i
wondered about do ing that to a mower etc. oh well. id like to see some of
those motors that have been discussed.
