I've knocked apart 6-10 cranks in search of good parts. I originally
used 2 wood splitting wedges driven in from opposite directions.
Later I got a piece of 3/4" plate steel and had a slot cut into it
with a plasma cutter. A 30ton press is what I have used mostly
because the crank would sit down into the table.
Take a peek into the Photos section called Cranks & Stuff, you can
see the tiny splines Bill is speaking of. The needle bearings should
be a standard metric size, maybe 2mm. They are joined in 2's in a
split aluminum cage. The early cranks have a hole drilled near the
big end of the rod. These cranks have smaller ID rods and journals,
therefore parts from these won't fit the later cranks.
I have split the cranks all the way down to the inner sprocket, the
inner flyweights have the rod journal incorporated into them, so a
machinist would have to decide to either weld & grind or remove &
replace. Carillo may have a suitable replacement rod from a 2 stroke
that we could use, maybe even a 2 piece rod.

Re: Cranks
I recently asked for more info on rebuilding cranks to see if my semi-
retired machinist friend was interested. Apparently he's doing
the "retired" part at the moment, and on vacation. Will see what he
thinks when he returns, which may be a while.
