Mechanical noise

My N600 engine sounds like a bag of old nails. I have replaced the
oil pump and primary driven sprocket (because the eccentric on the
primary driven spocket was worn), checked the primary drive tensioner
(works fine), checked the crankshaft main and big end bearings (no
free play at all), checked the cam rocker clearences (100% correct),
and run the engine briefly with the fan belt removed to eliminate the
cooling system as a noise source (made no difference). Recently I
checked the cam chain tensioner and I don't think it's working
properly. Could chain lash cause the noise I'm hearing? And if so,
does anyone know where I can get hold of a new hydraulic tensioner?

This may be a completely ignorant repsonse, but is it possible the rattling is coming from the clutch assemby?

Man, that sounds nasty! Like a real bad rod knock. YOur rod bearings are probably shot.

The tensioner on my second sedan had a long machine screw coming out of the hex nut. I thought it was hydraulic but this one seemed manual. I wonder if you cound convert a bad hydraulic tensioner with a long screw and make it a manual?

Either that or you got a exhaust leak at the head.

Yes, it was nasty. Mercifully that engine is now a "project waiting to happen" in my shed. I just hope that Duncan's engine has a DIFFERENT bad sound to it.

I'm afraid the writing is on the wall for that engine. It's just a matter of time now. If you value your cases you shouldn't drive it any more. It's not pretty when a rod lets go.

Well as I said the good news is that that engine is now just a project waiting to happen (I have a nice rebuilt sedan engine powering the coupe right now). The bad news is that the rod(s) may have already let go, seeing as the engine doesn't turn anymore.
