Hi all,
I've got the 0.50mm oversized jugs and pistons installed on the
preped lower end that I have, I have timed the engine off of the
driver's piston and all I am getting is a backfire out of the carb....
I have the cam in so that if the D.Side piston is on a comression
stroke, the flywheel mark is on the "t" and the slot in the end of
the cam is centered in the slot of the housing. I have adjusted the
points to the factory specs, and replaced them with a NOS set that I
had. I also put in a new set of plugs NGK 8E's
I have gone over the top end and everything seems to be OK. I just
cannot get it start, just backfire. I have a Shop Manual and a
Clymer's type manual. I followed the shop manual during the
reassembly. I know that it has to be something small, but I cannot
figure it out....
ANY thoughts / ideas / checks would be appreciated, I miss driving
the Z.
Thanks,
KC and the Z

Re: Timing Issues....
When I had my first z600 in 1972 I set the timing by putting the mark on the flywheel on center and put a 12 volt light between the plug and wire and rotated the distributor until light came on and then tighted it up. I think thats right but that was a long time ago and I am old now. GOOD Luck

Re: Timing Issues....
It doesn't matter which piston you use for timing. They are both up
at the same time. Not sure what you mean by the *D* Side.
When the pistons are both up is the notch on the flywheel near the
T ?
You might have the mechanical advancer not installed on the pin in
the camshaft or maybe the pin fell out when you had the engine apart.
Normally you line up the scribed or cast in mark on the cam sprocket
parallel to the top of the cam housing while lining up the T with the
notch in the lower pulley.

Re: Timing Issues....
I have gotten the engine to start, I had the valves too tight. It
still has a timing issue in that the engine has no power and is
idleing very rough, I believe that the distributer pin on the cam has
come out. Thanks for the help Miles. I plan on attacking it again
this evening.
