Misfire

Post by incompliable711 »

I just recently bought a 71 A600. It ran great when I picked it up in
Oklahoma. I towed it back to Minnesota in the rain and snow and now it
will only run on one cylinder. Well, it only idles on one cylinder.
Once I get it above about 2500 RPM when the vaccum advance engages then
the other cylinder kicks in. I checked/cleaned the points. I adjusted
them to about .013" gap. I replaced the lead wire going from the
points to the coil as it was deteriorating. I replaced the ground
strap from the coil/chassis to the engine because it was trashed. But
none of these things helped my problem at all. Any ideas?

Hi Misfire;
Check the plug wires, they twist in like a Motorcycle's, also look at the end (where it fits over the spark plug) there should be a small wire that crosses the hole at the end.  If this is missing or bent the plug may not be connecting.
All the other parts you mentioned must be working if it fires on the other cylinder as the Honda 600 fires both cylinders at the same time.

Both plugs fire at the same time. Replace the plugs and maybe use a
hotter plug like B7ES. Check the spark plug ends and like Bill said
the wires. On the last car I had I made a splice because my wire was
too short. I used a new section of spark plug wire and cut the head
off of a drywall screw and threaded each end into the wires. It
worked really well and even sold the car that way.
Vac advancer wouldn't affect the running of the other cylinder. As an
alternate check valve adjustment, set to .005" maybe you have a tight
valve that is stuck open and the higher reves could cause the valve
to seat intermitantly. Just a thought, probably not factual.

Thanks, It ended up being a mixture of wrong plugs, a dirty carb,
and the fact that it is 10 degrees outside here. Got it running
pretty good now.
