Z and AZ ?
what is the difference between the Z and AZ coupe?

dont quote me on this but i think the "A" stands for American Honda.

The domestic market Coupes (Japan) are known as Z coupes. The medalion on the rear piller for Japanese coupes has Z on it. The USA car vin begins with 'az', and IIRC doesn't mean anything officially. Datsun has the USA trademark on Z, so it didn't get made for the US market.
A buddy of mine swore his eary coupe had the Z medalions, but someone busted them off. My ex-brotherinlaw (also a coupe owner) had a similar recollection. But unless someone has pictures, it's still a myth.

with automatic trans :-) It also had the round dome light and not

twin cam 4 wheel disc braked Swift GTi. They had to drop the i and
just be GT.
Which brings up my next question. The AA600 which was the Automatic
Sedan, never sold in the USA but brought in for testing. In other
countries was it just the A600?

Just to confuse everyone, in Australia the sedans had a prefix
of "N". We had the N360 and N600 but were more commonly known as
Scamp. They were known as a 360 Scamp or 600 Scamp available with
manual or automatic transmissions. My Honda Life with a manual
transmission is an A360. There were 2 door and 4 door versions of
the Life but no automatic transmission.
The coupe which was known here as the "Z", had two variants. One
with an aircooled 360 motor and the other with a water cooled 360
motor like the Honda Life but with two side-draught carburettors.
Not sure what the letter prefix to the "Z" was but I'll try and post
it when I next see one.

Always wanted to talk to some one that had both the N and Life cars. Will the engine from the life bolt into a Z or Coupe 600 subframe? That water cooling has to be the best. I traded some parts for a single wire A600 trans from Roger Roy in Australia. Last I heard from Roger he had joined the Navy and was doing things on the high seas.

Hi Bill,
I think the engine would physically fit in the engine bay but I
think it would have to be on a different subframe. The water cooled
and air cooled motors both fitted into the coupes here.
The Honda Life was sold here along side the first generation Civic
in 1973. To me, there are many styling features of the first
generation Civic similar to the Life. The instruments are similar,
the steering wheel looks exactly the same, the ignition switch is in
the same position as the Civic on the steering column and having a
seperate gearbox the gear lever comes out of the floor where the
Civic does. High back bucket seats too.
I bought the Life in 1987 and drove it every day for about a year.
As parts became harder to find I only drove it to car club events.
My Honda Life is a 4 door version with a genuine 22,000 miles. Back
in 1973 was the time we were changing to metric so all the little
cars had speedometers in miles and the early Civics changed sometime
in 1974 to kilometers. The car is not perfect but it's almost
original. Performance is not great compared to the N360 sedan, must
be those extra 2 doors it has to lug around but it's lots easier to
drive and heaps more comfortable. The four wheel drum brakes are
fantastic. The rears are the same as the Civic and the fronts look
the same size. No brake booster here, rock hard brake pedal but the
car pulls up really well.
The engines suffered from head gasket failure frequently. The
thermatic fan switch is located on the head on these engines and I
heard that the reason why Honda changed the position of the
thermatic fan switch to the radiator for the first generation Civics
was because of this. I have installed a manual switch to overcome
this problem and kept the original switch on the head.
It's tucked away at the moment but as soon as I can get to it, I'll
post some pictures here.
