Check out Steve's Honda 600 page. If you look at this article , it shows pictures and a teardown of the 2 styles of carbs. The older style carb was a good carb but it has two significant problems;
1) replacement diaphragms are difficult to find
2) the carb would fail without warning. If the diaphragm developed a tear, the car would suddenly go from running normally to limping along at 10 mph.
The newer style carb works fine and doesn't have a catastrophic failure mode provided you keep pumping clean fuel to it. The newer style carb was embossed with the words "Keihn" on the top.
