In the beginning,  the engine # did match the engine # on the vin tag.  If you are buying a high mileage Honda 600 today,  chances are good the engine has been swapped out and the numbers no longer match.

Dale;
    No, good guess but wrong answer.  Honda 600 chassis (VIN) never matched the engine number.
Engine numbers are related to the country they were sent to and all N600's were numbered from the beginning to the end of production.  The same is for the Z Coupe.   And engine numbers were not always relative to production, rather they were significant to the month of production and not specific to any single day in the month.

I'd call that a big OOPS!
The correct answer was; "the engine # did match the engine # on the
vin tag." That is a correct statement, and had to be by U.S Import laws.
You are correct in saying that engine and chassis numbers didn't match
though.
