Did he tell you the price up front? Aren't those the parts you gave
him? Tim cares more about the cars he works on than about their
owner's feelings. That's not so hard to put up with, if it keeps your
35 year old car running at 30+MPG. (Mine gets 35.) I think when you
get your car together and feel how nicely it runs, and how much fun it
is to drive, you'll realize you got your money's worth. If not, sell
it as a well-running car with a recently rebuilt engine. You'll get
your money back.

A bit more information "Locklobster1" failed to give give us.
The engine was delivered in a box, with a number of parts missing.  The picture seems to be getting clear, almost HD.
The last engine I pieced together cost the owner quite a bit more than what you paid.
This URL (open your Yahoo Groups first and then go to this URL)
http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/ ... w/7fa0?b=9
Cost was quite a bit, with every bolt and washer replated the engine was citric acid bathed, every part measured and replaced if warn.  All seals, dampers, tensioners including slipper, cam wheel and gaskets replaced, in short it was completely restored, not just rebuilt.

I'm sorry, Bill, The engine was delivered in a box to who with parts
missing? to Tim or Lockster?
Jessica's engine was shipped to me in a box. The whole thing in one
box but it was dismantled. The UPS inspector delivered it to me
himself. It exceeded the weight limit and there were several holes in
the box, many broken parts and parts missing. The only thing that was
useable after the trip down from Seattle was the crankshaft, head and
1/2 the engine case. The cylinders got broken, the stator windings
got crushed, flywheel was shorted etc. Let's just say, the place
neglected to wrap the parts.

Hi Miles;
It seems that it ( the nine pictures of engine rebuild ) was given to Tim in a box.  As I understand it, apart and parts missing.

Wow is that nice!
I would almost hate to run that, but it almost needs to be on a engine stand to be appreciated instead of in a engine bay.

i'd hate to put my word in to this but the engine (other than the
old/original parts) looks great. when you have an engine rebuilt they
rebuild the block/head assembly. they do not rebuild vacuum advances,
exhaust manifolds or other misc stuff. just block and head, unless
you pay extra to have other items replaced. so like i said other than
the old original parts the engine looks fine... thats all i have to
say.

I've never been happy with his ebay listings - yes, very rude. Also -
the one time I bought gaskets from him, he basically bought them from
another Honda supporter and doubled the price. There are others (like
Miles, Bill and O'Connor (sp?)) that would have just sent me to the
source rather than take advantage of me.
Thanks for having the courage to state your experience.

Re: My rebuilt engine

Post by Kevin Lister »

I've never bought from Tim or had him do work for me but I have spoken to him on the phone more than once and he was a very nice guy!
I won't go into the details of my most recent conversation with him but I will say that he was very understanding and extermely kind to me. After reading all of the various posts I think that you got what you ordered. A rebuilt engine, nothing more, nothing less. It appears you also got it for a fair price.
I recommend you clean up the rest of the accessories on the engine to your satisfaction and enjoy the ride!

Thank you all for your help in finding a place to rebuild my engine. I will recomend anyone with a Honda 600 to come here. I had Tim Mings work on it, though it was a shoddy job. All in all, the price was $3,000. Not the best, but OK. He was very rude with me, and was not professional. No reciepts, no warranties, no nothing... not good.
I asked him if there was any gaurantee of his work. He said, "I'll gaurantee you it'll break down again". Priceless... . except for the $3,000. I uploaded some pictures of his work to the website. The phoyo album will be dubbed "My rebuilt engine".
I, regretfully, will not recommend anyone to Tim Mings. I am sure to be called on for my actions. Sure, he knows what he's doing, no doubt about that. Just, why can't he be a professional of it. The man was not worth my money. Better to send it to someone else. Just send me any remarks. I'll be glad to fill you all in on more.
Time is no Honda 600 God. No God would be so awful as to disgust His creation, as Mings did with my engine :(
