removing starter on AZ600 Coupe?

I'm going to be replacing the starter on my az600 coupe. Looks pretty
tight in there, will I need to pull the engine to get the starter out,
or is it possible to squeeze it out, with the engine in place? Thanks! -

HI, IAN--
welcome to the insanity!--the starter is absolute child's play--if i can do it, believe me, ANYONE can--2 bolts and she pretty much falls out--just remember to disconnect the battery before you start--(i removed a starter once from a neighbor's datsun and forgot to do the battery thing--starter got hung up on the way out--arc welded itself to the frame instantly and fried every primary wire before i could disconnect the positive wire--cost me 200 bucks )

In addition to disconnecting the + battery cable connection (at the battery), disconnect the small wire going to the starter motor solenoid.
It should be a push on connection.   Remove the 2 bolts,  and everything comes right out.

Starter removal is fairly easy as the others say. I do it with the car
on the ground. Disconnect the battery, then the black/white striped
wire at the solenoid, crank the steering wheel all the way to the
right, remove the starter cover held on by 3 bolts if you have one
anymore.
I use a 12mm short socket with a U-Joint 3/8" drive with a 6" extension
and a regular 3/8" ratchet. If you remove the battery completely you
can see all from above. Loosen & remove the bottom bolt without using
the U joint then use the u joint to snake around the starter to get the
top bolt out. When both bolts are out completely you will have to
withdraw and twist the starter - solenoid towards the back of the car
then tilt the starter downward. The starter comes out the bottom.
There is also sometimes another flat clip that keeps the battery hot
lead secured to the top starter bolt. There may be lots of oil or
grease on the starter. I see you are replacing it, but if you were to
clean and reuse it, take care to not get solvents into the starter. If
you remember to, attach the battery cable back on the starter before
reinstallation.

This reminds me of the guy who paid $450.00 to get his fan belt
changed ! His mechanic said the engine had to come out.....

New starter is in there, as of Friday night. Starts/Runs Great. Drove
it 30 miles this weekend. Thanks everyone -Ian
