Gas Tank Pickup tube

Post by franknfike »

Hey all, hoping somebody can help me. The pickup tube inside my gas tank was clogged so I put a coat hanger in it to unclog it. I attached the coat hanger to a drill and spun it but guess what - the hanger broke off inside the tube. Does anybody know what I could do to salvage this? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Tom

Take out the fuel sender and see if you can grab it and pull it out the inside of the tank. I tell people to use a speedometer cable to clean the tubes, flexible and wont break off, will unravel if you spin it the wrong way though.

All
Miles told me about this many years ago, and it really works.  If you can't find an old cable, they are cheap at the local auto parts store.

You can also find assorted sizes of flexible steel cable at Lowes at a low price per foot. My son and I have used this cable to replace a throttle cable on a Toyota MR2 and we are thinking of making replacement emergency brake cable to replace rusted and broken ones.

Question on pickup tube.
First, looks like it is crimped about an inch after entering the tank. Is this normal (to be clear of float?)
Finally, I was running a solid piece of copper wire (from the interior of some left over cable wire) and while difficult to get through, I did manage to do so.
However, the wire then broke off about 3 inches into pick up tube.
I cannot see any reasonable way to get the wire out without resorting to cutting open the tank.
I will keep trying to push it out into the interior of the tank and hope to grab it.
Any suggestions? (while waiting for replies to this post, I will give the speedo cable a try and see if it will put the copper wire out enough to grab.)
Many thanks.

Cried wolf too soon! Cable / drill did the trick - was able to push enough of the wire out into the tank until the tube was clear.

Bob,
If the pickup tube was clogged, there is much much more rust and crud to be found. Eric's green z600 had the same issue, worked good for awhile, then started clogging filters and carb. Save yourself hassle and boil the tank.

Thanks Mark. I have been soaking and sloshing vinegar and HD tow chain for 3 weeks in the hot sun. Every day I would filter the crud / rust out of the vinegar and wash out the tank and put vinegar back in. Twice I got 6 more gal of fresh vinegar. I think the pick up tube is not clogged
and resistance to the wire is due to the tube being crimped about an inch inside where the tube takes a nosedive to the bottom. I can blow air through the pickup tube without much backpressure.
I have put in the tank cleaner solution (step 1 of tank kit) and will do the cable / drill again.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
