Howdy all -
Mostly a lurker for the past 5 years, but now need some help.
I'm working on-and-off (unfortunately mostly off) on my '72 coupe. Had
the steering rack and carb re-built by Tim Mings in the past couple of
years --- but now I need to get the thing started!!. It ran okay when I
pulled the rack out 2 years ago.....
I have a fresh battery.
I do not detect any sizable spark at the points while cranking.
When I crank it over, the Black wire coming out of the alternator gets
REALLY hot - smoking-the-insulation kind of hot. According to the wiring
schematic in my service manual, this is the wire that connects to the
Black-with-yellow-stripe wire connecting the coil and the ignition
switch. Is this a cause or a symptom??
Also, when I went out today after a few weeks away, the fuel pump-carb
solenoid-carb heater 10-amp fuse was blown.
Help!

Check your grounds, negative lead under coil, and cross over to the engine. The black wire is getting hot because it is taking the load of the negative cable.
