Open your clutch, check to see the finger spring is not cracked, and the leaf spring bolts on the pressure plate could be broken all of which could be causing your clutch to bind.

Where did my idle go?
Re: Where did my idle go?
Hi Bill,
From his msg, it sounds like his clutch is working ok. It sounds like his engine isn't developing anywhere near the 36 hp it should and the weight of the car is bogging down the engine. The car was working a year ago and now it doesn't after sitting ....... I think the problem may be low engine compression, carburetor, or ignition. If it is the carb, you gave him some excellent advice a few days ago and he has other advice on checking the ignition & compression.
Dale
PS Maybe what he isn't telling us is that his clutch is slipping seriously or he has the old style primary drive (with the rod-shaped dampers) and the primary drive is slipping which looks like a lack of power to the transmission.

Re: Where did my idle go?
Dale;
I have had the finger or diaphragm spring break on me while driving and it stopped the engine, then when I started it up it would run at half the speed and I was pushing in on the peddle to build power to go a bit more. I also had binding when the leaf spring bolts that hold the pressure plate in place broke. It (the car) would run ok with one broken (each spring bolt has two leafs) but with both broken I would have only half of the plate connecting and it too would slow the car.
Another issue may be that he only has one spark plug working. Meaning half the HP, as long as both plug wires are connected the engine will run.
What really places it on the clutch is him pushing in on it and the engine revs well, then when he lets it out the engine slows to almost nothing.

Re: Where did my idle go?
see if your mechanical advance got stuck in advance when you had it at a high rpm or vaccum advance
