I am replacing my reverse gear and would like to know what type of gasket I will be needing to replace. Looking in the manual it doesn't give me that information. I also was wondering what cable ties into the right side transfer case cover that I am removing to access the reverse gear. I guess it is the speedo cable, but can I leave that attached and remove the cover OR do I need to detach it and THEN remove the cover? Anything else I need to know? Thank you in advance.

I have read all that is in the database regarding this situation and I still do not know if the gasket is paper or silicone or something else. If anyone can help me with that information that would be awesome. One post confirmed that it is the speedo cable running into the side of the case cover so that mystery is solved, but I want to be absolutely sure that I can remove the cover with it intact. Do I need to disconnect the speedo and/or the reverse switch prior to removing the cover? I already have the 10mm bolts loosened and ready to pull off. Just waiting on a few words....

Paper gasket if it is still stock. I think you will find it easier to just disconnect speed-o-cable and unplug reverse wires. Thats if everything is stock and hasn't been hacked before.
The next question is why is reverse bad? Does it grind or what? Check and make sure that the shift linkage has a roll pin that is not interferring with shaft going into engine. When selecting reverse the shaft actually travels into the engine farther than any other gear. What most hacks do when they repair/jack things up is replace with a bolt or a roll pin that is to long. If the shaft doesn't travel far enough into the case the reverse gear won't mesh together right.

So I'm not sure that replacing the reverse gear is the solution but that is where I am starting in my quest to be able to back up.
The rest of the gears engage and seem to work fine. I have an extra set of transmission shafts and gears so I am hoping that I find a gnarled reverse gear when I open it. I read that if it is the fork that is bent, I can possibly pound it out to straight again and reuse it. If it is cracked or broke, I will be searching for a replacement.
Your comment about the shift linkage is interesting. I will check, but I don't know of anyone messing with it, should be stock. I'll trace the shift linkage all the way to the engine and look for something out of whack. As i said though, it engaged fine until the accident.

What are the chances the fender bender jolt moved the engine position enough that the reverse doesn't go in quite far enough any longer and ther eis really nothing wrong with the reverse gear itself?

That is what I started to think after reading the last response. I think that is probable.
Two questions...
Could this be fixed by adjustment of the shift linkage somehow?
I guess the proper way to fix this is to pull the frame back to straight IF it is the frame that is bent.
Is there a possibility that the engine is out of position WITHOUT the frame being bent?
It wouldn't be the first time I have 'Flintstoned' it in this car! The starter went out on me and while I waited for it to arrive/be replace, I would push start it. HA.
