I was not going to do it. I really wasn't. I told everyone I was going to stop playing around with this Subaru 360 and do something else. I could not help myself. I felt it needed more sound. I took the muffler off, and made a straight pipe exhaust. I thought it would be really loud but it's not. At least none of my neigbors were chasing me down the streets in pajamas yelling obsenities. Yet.... It sounds pretty neat and really revs ... like a Vespa! Lost a little torque on the low end and gained a little kick on the top end. Pretty much what I expected. Take a listen, tell me what you think. I have a custom made expansion pipe, so it sounds better than ordinary Subaru 360's

Honda 600 or Subaru 360
Hi Mark, cool little car and it's under a 1000 pounds.
I didn't know they were 2 strokes.
It's probably a piston port design, not a reed valve?
The car sounds great at higher RPM's, but like you said it has lost it's low/mid power. I bet your 0-60mph time is slower without the full exhaust system.
I race 2 stroke go-Karts and build motors. A 2 stroke needs a tuned expansion chamber and proper back pressure to keep the air/fuel from being pumped out the exhaust and wasted.
I am sure the 360 club has done some dyno testing to see what's best.
But enough about Subaru's, this is a Honda club!
Which stock car is quicker to 60mph?
:)

Re: Honda 600 or Subaru 360
Hi Lyle,
The Subaru 360's were rated @ 25 crank hp where as the Honda 600's supposedly have 37 hp. I think the Honda 600's weigh a little more but they would win. No problem. I have 3 Honda 600's.
Funny you ask, no one but me has modified a Subaru 360 to go faster. This particular 360 car has an expansion pipe I designed and made from a racing go kart. Yes they are old style piston port design, no reed valve, no exhaust valve, 6.0 to 1 compression, small 19mm carb, and no expansion pipe at all from factory. I also have a Subaru 360 van I put on the dyno.

They are fun but not fast. It is fun to make them go fast. I'd love to get some ideas from you

Re: Honda 600 or Subaru 360
Hi Mark, it's fun to get more power out of something, must be the Tim Allen syndrome in guy's.
Don't know anything about that engine.
Max RPM's? Roller bearings? port design?
Lot's of things to do to get more power.
*1st, everything has to be perfectly square to the crank.
* Bearing pockets aligned.
*Compression needs to be raised, combustion chamber modified.
*Larger Carb once things are modified.
A dyno or stop watch is the only way to tune.
The stop watch don't lie!
Go to the Yamaha RD350 web sites, they are close to what you have and they love power!
Have fun.
