Removing 1970 N600 steering rack

Removing 1970 N600 steering rack

Can the steering rack be removed with engine in place? There is no mention in the manual because there is no engine in the car in the manual.

YES ! Take off the carb & cooling fan.

Many thanks, but I have removed those items and the rack hits the trans housing right by the reverse gear restriction pin spring and ball cap bolt. It hits housing before the pinion is clear of the fire wall. Maybe my engine is shifted back due to failing motor mounts. The interference is about 10mm.

you need to remove the 2 rear subframe bolts and tilt the emgine down.

I was able to shift the motor the about 5mm and this allowed the rack to be removed. Thanks for the assistance.
