1971 or 1972 coupe?
1971 or 1972 coupe?
Hi. Im going to change titles over for my coupe 7 sedan finally and I notice that one of the titles says 1972. My coupe has the old flat style end bumper though. Am I wrong or is this not the 1971? Did this bumper interchange and bolt up the same as 1972? Can it be a replacement? How can I check to make sure the title is correct? It only bums me out because I already bought the NOS texas 71 plates for both. Like buying a new windshield wiper for a busted windshield. lol If you old hands can give me some insight I would really appreciate it. Thanx in advance.

hi-- i may be TOTALLY wrong here-- and, if so, miles will correct me i believe that the 1971 coupe had the 3-piece bumper and the 1972 the 1 piece.
the center section of the '71 folds down to access the spare DEFINITELY double and triple check this paige

71 has a 5 pc rear bumper with the over riders. the 72 has the 3 pc bumper with no over rider.
the 71 is also the flat style rear bumper where as the 72 is more pointed.

The 1971 and 1972 Honda 600 Coupes differ in a number of ways. The outward or visual difference is the rear bumper. Eric is correct, the Honda 600 Z Coupe was first manufactured in April 1971. Both the 1971 and 1972 cars had the spair tire, jack and tool storage in the "Trap door" at the rear of the car. In January 1972 Honda made many significant changes to the Coupe, the rear bumper design was one of them. However when they arrived in the USA more than a few were sold and licensed as 1972 model because it took a while to get here and cars normally started the model year in September of the previous year. And because they didn't fly off the dealers showroom in many areas of the US, a number were licensed as 1973 and even 1974 models. This is why it's always good to check all the numbers on the car (Left side of the Dash, drivers door post, the engine compartment red lable and the VIN stamped into the body of the car (to the right of the carberator in front of the air box)). Which is the same on both the Coupe and Sedan for the USA market. More than once I have seen cars with different engines and ID plates that didn't match with the others and the stamped number on the body was different from all the other tags. Then when you have to take your car to the
D MV to have it verified (Normally once the car has sat for a number of years the plates fall out of the computers, titles are lost and all you have is an old out of date registration) things really start to heat up.
I had a car that had not been registered since 1977, it had the wrong engine and it had been left at a shop, they didn't pay so the shop kept the car. When I got it there had been 6 previous owners and I had 5 hand written sales slips and an old registration. I had to locate the original owner to have them sign over the car which they said they would do over the phone, but when I sent the DMV forms to them to transfer the car in my name they declined. The US postal office has a way to send this type of registered mail so that if they don't sign then the Post Office returns the documents to you unsigned and noted as such. This then becomes the document needed to register the car.
Along with the other 5 hand written sales slips and the old registration slip (keep everything). Even then the car had to be tralired over to the DMV to have them sight the VIN and the old registration before I could get a clean title for the car. The next trick is to pay for the title but not the registration. States may differ but here in (the state where I live) I have kept cars titled for years until the car was restored or running and then register them without any late fees. Although, if you are purchasing a car that is in boxes, take pictures with you of the car in the unrestored project state it is in to prove to the DMV that this project car is not worth the thousands DMV believes all old cars are worth. Or you could have registration fees in the hundreds each year.

I've heard many times over that depending on the time of the year that the car was sold it could have been titled originally as a 1972 even though it was built in 1971. For example your car may have been built in 9/71 but not sold and titled for the first time until 2/72 if it sat at the dealer for a few months before between the time the dealer took delivery and it was sold to the first owner.
On the inside of the drivers door there should be a build date on the metal stamped plate.
Also the 71 had non retractable front seatbelts and 72s had retracting front seat belts.

The small black plate on your drivers door post just below the door catch should say 12/71 (from the VIN code you sent). In which case the car didn't reach the US until 1972 and then titled as a 1972 Honda 600.
