Does anyone know the correct deck height(the top of the piston to the top of the cylinder barrel) on an N600 engine? I have scoured my shop manual and can't find it.

When you take the head in to the machinist to have a valve job done they should be able to tell you. It the head has been ground already they should be able to tell. The Honda 600 engine is an impacting engine, in that the valves will touch the piston if out of time. So things are already close. Always use the B8ES style spark plug as it is the correct length to be in the cylinder while not having threads open to the chamber. Spark plug threads can be stripped due to carbon buildup along with cross threading. Speaking of spark plug threads; if they need to be fixed, talk to a VW shop, there are more of them around and the VW air-cooled engine has the same problem.

This is a specific dimension that effects compression/quench as well as the interference clearance you mention. I work in a VW/Porsche shop. We sometimes have to shim the VW barrels to place the piston at 0.020 to 0.040 below the top of the barrel.
We have put a lot of effort into this motor. Tig welded and machined new "slipper" dowel slots and trued up all surfaces. I would hate to assemble it with this dimension incorrect. I don't want to be to conservative and loose the 8.3 to 1 compression. Later model water cooled Honda's like the D motors have a deck to piston clearance of 0,019.

Hi David;
I understand what you mean. Because the Honda pistons are domed, machining off any of the head surface will have to be made up by opening the chamber. Opening the chamber includes grinding the valves to lower them, which brings up the rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and cams’ lob height.
And when things get tight the thickness of the gasket material comes into play.
When working with a local machine shop I had the whole engine in the shop to get everything right.
When I had a valve job done I had a shop that looked at 3 different Honda 600 engines and we went with no more than 5 thousands off each head to check any warp that the head had.
Never had a problem.
Now the slipper pins will always wallow out the grooves you had put back in if you just put the pins back in.
I JB Weld in every pin, both top and bottom.
I have taken apart engines with 40 thousand miles on them after I put the JB Weld in the grooves with the pins and none moved.
Just my opinion.
