I have a nice new engine head here, complete with valves and associated parts. Actually it's not so nice - thick with grime, scale, a little rust, cobwebs - nasty. My thought is to let it soak in something for a few days before I even go near it. Anyone have a suggestion as to what to use? The local Autozone suggested a $25 bucket of parts cleaner - they claim it won't hurt aluminum - but I am not sure I believe it. So, what to use? Orange degreaser? Marvel miracle oil? Engine degreaser? The big bucket of parts cleaner?

A nice bucket of K2 heating oil is what my 97 year old grandfather used to clean everything.... I have done this many times and find it to work beautifully....He even used to heat it with a torch but I never felt comfortable with that..... scrub with a brush after and rinse with lacqour thinner....not only does it de-grease but it also frees stuck parts.....

The best bet is to take it apart, then walk it over to your local machine shop, most have a citric bath cleaner they use to clean parts. I have used Transmission shops too, most also have the citric bath cleaners. They hang your parts and do a professional job, taking them down and scrubbing them after the initial wash. I get a whole engine (the aluminum cases) cleaned for about $20.00. I don't know about you but I hate to mess with the sticky ones, yea know the engines that had the long leak that picked up all the dirt on the road and then added a bit more oil and baking it on for good measure. The parts come out really nice, and I am doing other things, like changing the window channel felt.
Almost as fun as watching paint dry.
