removal of valves and valve springs

So I have this old head here, with a set of valves that seems in good shape.  I want to take it apart to clean the crud off the valves and other parts.  I see that on p66 of the Coupe Shop manual, the proper method of removing the valves involves a big clamp-like special tool called a "valve lifter".  Needless to say, I do not have one of those lying about.  Is there a technique for compressing the spring and getting it apart without it?

Best way is to take it to your local auto machine shop and have them pull the valves for you.  Or, go to harbor freight and they sell one for about $15.00.  I have done it in a large vice too,  place a socket on the spring side and something on the valve side and turn the vice in.  The two keepers on the spring side fall into the socket and when you back off on the vice the valve will be loose.  Not good for replacing them.

Go to AutoZone/Checker/Kragen or whatever local variation of the big
cain stores is in your area. Most of them will will loan you the tool
for free with a deposit.
