Bitten by the Bug Again - Newbie from Australia

Post by Duane »

Hi all,
I have been watching this forum for a few years now, but this is my first contribution. Are there many members here from Australia? I used to have a vast collection of Zot's, including a hardtop and a Z600 conversion. Unfortunately, 2 were crushed and the others donated to a local Honda club when I was forced to move house suddenly.
I recently found a thread on a classic Japanese car forum asking for information on the value of a local Z360, so I decided to have a look. Of course, one look at the little thing and I fell in love again...I kept all my old manuals and books in the vain hope I might find another car one day. Dare I ask, does anyone have a Zot for sale, particularly in Adelaide?
Other questions: most survivors seem to be aircooled models. If I found one of these (there is one for sale here currently, but too expensive) would be interested in converting to a JDM spec twin carb and 5-speed set up (with interior overhead console too) - are these parts still obtainable? There is a GSS to this spec currently on Yahoo Japan, but I'm not up to importing it.
Also, will these parts fit to a 600 motor, thus producing a 'super Z600'? I've always preferred the look of the hardtops, but there's little you can do with the motors...I want to have some fun.
Anyway, I'm an eternal dreamer, so always looking for that next project. If someone does have a car here, I would prefer a good one that I can use. Fingers crossed.
Cheers!

Your comments raise a lot of questions for me.  In the U.S. the last model year for the 600 was 1972 although somehow the  last shipments arrived and were sold in 1973.  I am the original owner of one of these I bought new.  It is titled incorrectly as a 73 but is a 72.
In the U.S. the air-cooled 600's were replaced by the 4 cyl water cooled Civic which was different in every way apart from the the FWD powertrain layout.
It sounds from your note that Honda continued to make the some version of the 600, and with water cooling and a 5-speed.  Oh my, how I used to wish for one more gear on long drives across Texas back in the day.  Anyway, I gather from your note they continued to sell them in Australia.
Could you give us a brief lesson on the later versions?  Was "Zot" just a nickname?
Also, I consider a 600 to be a pretty slow car.  Just keeping up with traffic is a near continual WOT exercise.  A Z360 must have been impossibly slow.  Top speed?, Acceleration specs?  Please enlighten us.

Hi Blake,
Thanks for your reply. Honestly, it sounds as if you guys got the best of the bunch over there, in the AZ600.
My grip on Z history (always referred to as Z360, no 'A' for some reason) is a little shakey, but here goes.
The air-cooled Z360 was released here in March - April 1971 and continued for 2 years. Both the N360 and N600 had been available for several years prior to this. In early 1973 the Z360 was replaced by the Z360 Hardtop, which featured a full pillarless hardtop design, 8cm longer wheelbase (but same overall external dimensions) and a twin-carb water-cooled 2-cylinder 360cc engine. This was shared with the 360 Life, marketed here around the same time, which replaced the N360. All 2-cylinders sales ceased in mid-1974. Few parts are shared with a Z360 and a Z360 Hardtop, although they look externally similar.
I'll post pictures of my old cars when I get home (currently at work), just out of interest.
Oddly, as Australia is similar in size to the US, we never received the more useasble Z600, although N600 motors can be used to perform the conversion. I had one of these, not a genuine Z600. The water-cooled versions do not seem to share parts with anything else, maybe the odd Civic or Acty van (did you get those?) part - impossible to find parts for, as I discovered.
Unfortunately, we never received Z360 5-speed models here either, but they was available in Japan and parts seem to appear very occasionally. I wondered whether Z600's could be converted to a 5-speed? Sounds like we need some domestic Japanese input!
Zot was a local nickname for the Z range, I wasn't aware it was an Aussie only thing! I don't have the specs of the Z360 available, suffice to say performance was 'pedestrian', but from my experience a lot of high-revving fun. Sadly I never got my 600cc car on the road.
Glad that you guys in the US are supporting the parts situation, sounds like a treasure trove of great information too. Thanks again for the reply, I hope to let you all know when I make a successful purchase one day.
Cheers,
Duane

My pleasure Blake. I've just posted photo's of my old cars (from 1998) under "Duane's Old Z360's (Gone)". This entire collection of 4 cars and enough parts to make as many again, cost me AU$1,600 way back then. A sudden move of house and loss of job meant that one was crushed (to lighten my load), one sold (and then crushed by its owner) and two given to the local Honda club. I wish I had them now. :-(
Cheers,
Duane

Blake;
Duane is speaking of the Honda Life.  All production of the Z600 ended in August of 1972.  And just as he said of the Z360 beginning in April of 1971, so did the Z600.

How similar was the powertrain of the Life to the 600?

Re: Bitten by the Bug Again - Newbie from Australia

Hi Blake,
Quite different, being water-cooled, although still a 354cc alloy OHC twin-cylinder. It resembles half a Civic engine. 360cc was the only size we got out here, I'm not sure if there was a 600cc version.
The Life sedan came in a 2-door and a 4-door version (I used to see one every day, until recently) as well as the Z360 Hardtop.
Cheers,
Duane

Hi There,
been a while since i've been on here, 2010 was a hectic year..
i'm in tassie, have 7 of the N360's/N600's. but only heard of a couple of the Z360's down here.
Hope you're still keen, and have got your hands on something to tinker with = D
