Starter problems

I've been tinkering with one of my '71 sedans and a few weeks ago I got it running when I bypassed the plugged up fuel tank. I tried starting it again last week and it quit cranking when I turned the key. I pulled it out and hooked it up to a battery and it seemed to be OK (bendix spun up and moved, etc.), but I installed the starter from my parts car anyway. It started cranking again, but it did so very slowly and would not spin fast enough to start the car. I tried again yesterday and it also quit cranking.....no clicking, just turn the key and nothing happens.
Did I fry both starters? Is this common? What is the prognosis? Do I just need to tear it apart and clean it up and maybe replace the brushes or ?? HELP!!!

It seems a little too coincidental that you have two starters doing the same and at least one of them seems to work fine when out of the vehicle.   I would double check the battery, cables, connections and make sure the engine is grounded to the chassis.  Then if you don't find the problem, I would take both starters to a rebuild shop to have them tested, as they probably won't charge you much if anything just to test them.

My first thought was "battery" too.
And generic parts stores Advanced Auto or Auto Zone will test your starters for free.

Hi Mike, bad ground is always a common problem. Also check the main fuse, on my Blue coupe the screws were loose and rusty.
Cleaned everything and tightened the screws and it started right up.

Thanks for everyone's replies.  It probably is a bad ground somewhere.....this car has sat for 15 years and I just haven't gone through everything yet.  All I know is that it started up with no issues several weeks ago and now it doesn't.  The battery cables are questionable and the main fuse hasn't been checked yet either.  I will be playing with it again this weekend and will let you guys know what happens.
