oil cap blew off.

Post by spannchad »

So now my coupe blew oil everywhere. when I went to take it for a spin it wouldnt idle down from 3000 rpm so I pulled out of the driveway and it started smoking.once i got it back up the driveway and popped the hood the cap was off and oil was everywhere. still has oil in it tho. any ideas would be helpful on whats goin on ands what to do next. Thanx. Oh and starter is still stuck on sedan after pullin it off twice. Solenoid? I ordered one. We will see. Any help is always appreciated from much wiser 600 folks. Thanx.

Did the oil cap blow off or fall off? And where was the smoke from, the tail pipe or just off the engine where oil came out from the cap being off. And on the sedan, does the starter keep running with the smaller wire that comes from the ignition switch disconnected?

ok.the smoke was from motor and honestly think it wasnt screwed on properly.we will see tomorrow. it still has full oil so it just scared me but i didnt hear it pop or hit the hood.so i think it was just burnin off exhaust manifold zand stuff.and yes the starter is spinning without keys in ignition as soon as it connects to batt even with little wire off.any thoughts?and thanx

That is an easy one. you didn't put the cap on correctly. There is no possible it will come loose on its own if you have a good gasket installed on the cap.

If the starter is running without using the ignition switch,  I can think of 3 scenarios;
1)  someone hooked up the cable from the battery to the starter solenoid incorrectly
2)  someone hooked up the cable from the starter to the solenoid incorrectly
3)  you have a defective solenoid
Take your starter out of the car and check it out.  Some auto parts stores will check out a starter motor at no charge.  If you need help on "how to check a starter and/or the solenoid",  let us know.
good luck,
Dale

yep it is the solenoid. the copper washer has welded itself to the two posts under the cap. this can be easily taken apart and repaired.

I didn't think the cap blew off as it a positive lock design. Make sure it fits tight, the seal may have shrunk some, you may have to bend the latch tabs a little to make it fit tight or you may need a new cap. And try to clean the oil off the exhaust best possible with a cleaner of some sort.It will burn off, but have seen a few catch fire because of oil on exhaust.  As far as the coupe starter, you definitely have a problem with the solenoid, make sure the solenoid is all correctly installed on the starter.   Good luck with it.  Brad From:
