Hi Rick;
The chassis or VIN number is for a1972 Honda 600 Sedan built in August of 72.  The engine is from a car built in March of 1971.  The crashing of the gears is typical of the constant transmission which is in the car.  There is most likely a couple of the thrust washers that have to much wear and are causing some difficulty in shifting.  Then again, someone could have put the full synchro transmission in the constant transmission case and didn't cut enough of the fins inside of the case to allow proper shifting.  Without opening up the transmission there is not much that can be said.  Either way, the lash on the primary and counter shafts need to be measured and worked out.
 Going through the Honda 600 Sedan shop manual will give you a better idea if what is going on.
