Thanks for all the posts on the cooling fan. I'm getting the final
touches done on my 71 sedan, which will be my driver. In the next
year or so, I plan on installing an oil cooler. But first, a general
cooling fan question. (Mine is installed and works correctly.)
Some new vehicles these days have electric cooling fans which run for
a while after the car is shut off. Has anyone had any experience
modifying a 600 to add an electric cooling fan, first of all, and
second, if you did, did you make it so it runs for a while after the
car is off? Is there any long term benefit to making the conversion,
like there is with the oil cooler, when the original is still in
place and working well? (With the oil cooler, there's the benefit of
available filters.)

There are a couple of issues going on here. First, the temp sender is what comes with a water temp gauge, drill a hole, tap it and mount your sender. With a oil cooler it has a remote oil filter which is plumed to accept the temp sender and oil pressure gauges. The oil cooler also has a oil thermostat unit that keeps the oil from going into the cooler before the oil reaches 160 degrees, and then just starts to open and is fully open at 165.
As to an electric fan, I have heard of them being attached. The fan has a thermal wire hooked to the engine. Cooling is accomplished when air is pulled through the radiator. When the engine is turned off the water is no longer moving through the radiator, so if the benefit is cooling the water in the radiator how does this help the engine? Maybe I am too old school.
However, pulling the air through the cylinders seems like a good idea, but I would still configure the fan the way Honda did and placing a temp gauge to start/stop the fan sounds high tech. However the existing fan, rotates with the RPM's of the engine, allowing it to cool the engine as it produces more heat.
