Bill, ive always wanted to ask this question to a points car restorer. When You restore a car, lets say You have a choice for a perfect condition used front fender or a new never used one. Both are correct for the car, when its together there will be no difference between replacing it with the new or the used. Why will someone pay hundreds, sometimes thousands for the new old part, may even have dings in it, over a correct used part even in perfect condition. I see this a lot with GM muscle car parts. Sometimes i miss the obvious but I was never able to wrap my mind around that. What gives? Thanks, Tim

The current N.A.D.A. classic car appraisal guide has the 1970 Honda 600 Sedan is $11,050.00 in excellent over all condition, needing no reconditioning. Which I believe this car is correctly priced at 9,000.00. In the pictures provided there is some wear and admittedly the radio does not work. The side marker lenses are faded. The seat material is original from the pictures but the design is not what was used on the Honda 600 Sedan built having chassis numbers which fall from/to 1020209 through 1033851. The design or pattern is straight for this series of Sedan not angled as these are. These are original seats but for a car built after March 1971. This is when all sedans were available with full synchro, the seat pattern changed as did the air box horn, the fan housing, the fin design and the list goes on for this date change Honda made. These seats may have been in the car when the owner purchased it because the early seats had a rubber diaphragm under the foam and they gave out and these have springs. Even the steering wheel is for a later model Sedan, it should have the single horn button and not the wings. The early steering wheel is part number 53100-568-600 and the later one is part number 53110-568-600. Honda had the later number in the August 1972 parts manual, where the October 1977 parts manual has only the early number so we could go back and forth on that one. But a parts manual from England shows not only these two but two other sedan steering wheels that could be ordered if you had the numbers.
DON'T GET ME WRONG, this is a nice car and worthy of accolades, but from a judging point of view, these are things that will stand out in a judged event.
I don't have original material on the seats in my cars, can't get it. But the design (pattern) is correct for the build date/chassis number. I have not seen the rest of the pictures of the car, does anyone have them?

For our sake let's hope so (car sells at a high price). I know many of us have invested quite a bit in our cars, more than expected values. Not that many of us, or me, do this to speculate and profit, but it is good to know that its an asset and that your effort and cost pays more than satisfaction and pride of ownership.
I have two of Z600. I will be selling one of them as I don't need two of them. I'm a bit thorough with my cars and in this case, these cars have been a challenge as to availability of parts and as to how reasonable in pricing some are.

Having a part that has never been in the light of day is something people from the salt belt dream of. I used to live in Minnesota, rust came with every car... Here in San Diego, there is still rust but much less of it. When I was in Hawaii, there were two commons for the collector car folks; it looked good until you started grinding away on it. I carried a small magnet (one of the ones that used to be in a pot holder) and lay it against cars. If it fell off... Bondo (or very thick paint) was there. If it stayed, it was well prepped and had nicely done paint we would start looking the car over. There is a shop here in town that still does led fill. But even led will give way to rust. So an NOS fender is a real score.
When you are in the judging field and are rating a clean restoration fit goes with finish. Why would you want to apologize for your restoration if you don't have to. So NOS parts come at a premium.

Thanks Bill, I have a 66 Nova that ive been working on for a long time and i had to replace a drivers rear quarter on it it. Every once in awhile id see an NOS quarter come up thru Craigslist or other places and it would be like $1200 or more. I couldnt justify that for what it was. I ended up getting mine thru Goodmark for i think $350. They had a rating system of 1-5 on replacement fit and their panel was one down from the best. It ended up fitting well but the price difference was obscene for a NOS compared to the reman. But i have a little more understanding now as to why someone would pay

Sweet, I had a 65 Nova with a basic 230 in it, two door hard top as a daily driver back in 1971 through 74. Great car, one of the ones I wouldn't mind having back. I often advise car owners at a judged event that there are always going to be two requirements for any show.
It's something you have to ask yourself while prepping the car. Is it there (it being the part) and is it clean. If you are showing your 71 Coupe and the rubber trim across the cowl lip is missing or the windshield washer bag is faded but original, is the area clean, even to polishing the spear tire door on the inside. It's all in the details. Often I take the trophy because I brought the fire extinguisher and captured the extra 10 points the other guy didn't. Or I had the shop manual, owners manual and brought the parts manual along. Or I took the time to put the window sticker on the window to give it that new car (on the lot) look. And don't forget to bring along a brush to clean the grass out of the tire tread (when the event is on grass).
A couple of years back I had my 1978 Vette at a show and the engine compartment is still original, it's clean and all there, but showing it's age. One of the Judges pointed out that although the next car over was a ground up restoration, it lacked the authenticity mine had. It took second place but was asked to be on the cover of the events brochure for this years show. And everything you get for your car adds to the things you want to have ready to show the Insurance guys should anything happen to it. I don't care if it is a letter from the parade thanking you for driving it down the road, it adds to the value someone else has for your car.
