Is this how it's supposed to be?

I have had my Coupe for about a month now, and have driven a few hundred miles. Prior to this, I had never even sat in a 600, harldy ever seen one, never owned one. Because of this I have several questions that fall into the "is this the way it's supposed to be?" category, because I have nothing to compare the experience to. Here are two that come to mind...
1) While driving along in any gear, I notice that the gearshift can be moved A LOT, mostly side to side, in an arc. It seems that the movement of the part of the shifter I hold is actually only rotating the linkage below, not really moving it anywhere. Is this rotation OK? Is this a function of the design of the shifter, or something else?
2) When I apply the gas while driving in any gear, there is a noise from the engine that sounds like a chain, in addition to the "engine sound". When I take my foot off the gas the "chain sound " stops. This happens at any speed. Is this how it ought to sound? Should I HEAR the camshaft chain normally? Maybe I should record it and post the sound somewhere...

You may want to check the fan mounting on the back of
the engine. I noticed on mine that as you tighten
this, it will remove the "chain" sounds. It also
makes more noise under throttle than at idle.
