I'm looking at a poor condition N600 in Colorado and wondered if
anyone on this group has experience with engine swaps, possibly a
modern 4 cyl Honda cycle motor. What would you see as challenges for
such a swap?

Re: N600 engine swap
I have no experience with 600 engine swaps, but a question I keep coming up with is where will you make the attachment between new and old? The Honda 600 uses the same oil to lubricate and cool both the engine and transmission, so you can't just take off the cylinders on up and somehow match up to the crankshaft chain, using the same trans at the engine/trans division. I've wondered if any 2-cylinder modern motorcycle engine might be compatible? Consider the parts substitutions of today, which gaskets can be used on the original 600 borrowed from which engine?
However the 600 has a very nice engine subframe that holds the engine and transmission, and fuels the imagination... I really don't know which 4 cyl cycle engine I'd use.
If a person took a Honda GoldWing engine and transmission and adapted the chains to match at the clutch of the 600, ...I'd like to do this with my Sundance. Some revolutionary ideas are just too weird, though. So I decided not to replace engines on my S/d, but to remove cylinders. Let me know your thoughts and your progress.

Do You Yahoo!?

Re: N600 engine swap
Lack of reverse is a big one. (Someone already mentioned how the
transmission is part of the motor for the stock 600 as well as the
motorcycle.)
Another issue is space in general. Take a look at the angle of a
motorcycle engine - many of any good size have the cylinders pitched
forward - making for (as the engine would sit in the car) a longer
engine. The stock 600 have the pistons almost at 90 degrees from the
ground.
I'd say to join up with "modmicros" here at Yahoo - not many members,
but you'll see at least one good 600 swap in there.
And don't let me rain on your parade - swaps can be done with the car
and have, but it's a lot of work and kind of (IMHO) goes against the
whole spirit of the car. After August we'll start in on our swap for
the Bonneville Honda, unveil her in August of 2006. (Provided we get
the 100 mark . . . keep your fingers crossed for us!)
