I am replacing the long brake line to the back of the car and the 3/16"
lines I bought don't seem to be the right thread pitch...they screw together
for a few rotations and then get very tight before the flared end of the
line has contacted its mating surface. Do I need lines with a special
thread on the nuts? If so, where can I get them?

The "flare nuts" on the brake lines are a 10 mm thread... the brake lines with the proper nuts can be purchased at Bap Geon and Napa auto parts outlets in lengths that vary in 10 inch increments!!
I hope you did not try to tighten the 3/16 line...the brass fittings are kind of soft!!

I am not clear on what your threading your new brake line into. But, as already stated, all threads are metric on the Honda. And as Larry said, don't try and tighten it as there will be (Hell) to pay trying to thread in a metric end later.
The Hex end of the fitting is for a 10mm wrench, but the thread diameter is 8mm, 1.0 thread pitch if memory serves me correctly as I don't have one sitting with me as I answer this e-mail at 3 am. You should have the one you removed to use as a comparing item when you go to the parts store. But if you told the parts guy at the store what it was for when you purchased the first one, and he sold you a SAE then I'd look for another parts guy.

I am replacing the longest line to the back because it is plugged with dried brake fluid, so I am threading the lines into the MC and the porportioning valve near the rear axle. I guess a few turns is not enough to know if the threads are truly compatible. I thought I grabbed lines from a box that said "metric", but I just looked and the label on the actual lines says nothing about the threading. I will go to NAPA tomorrow and make sure I get the right ones. I only tightened the MC end finger tight (and got a nice brake fluid puddle on my garage floor overnight), but I did use a wrench on the porportioning valve so I may need to steal the one from my other 600.
Thanks again for the help. I plan to get to the DMV this week and register this car so I can start driving it instead of just lying under it.

Wheel cylinders (rears) on the USA sold Honda 600 Sedan & Coupe:
The Hard lines and flex lines have 10 x 1.25 thread pitch.
The Bleeders are 8 x 1.25 thread pitch
The Calipers are 10 x 1.25 thread pitch on the Banjo fittings
The Bleeders are 10 x 1.0 thread pitch
Brake Master cylinder hard lines are 10 x 1.25mm
Bleeders are 8 x 1.25
Brake Booster in & out 10 x 1.25 (early sedan bendix boosters differ)
Brake booster low pressure switches 1/8 BSP not NPT thread pitch
Civic & most other later Honda's flare nuts are 10 x 1.0mm thread
pitch and unless you use Civic wheel cylinder forcing the flare nuts
in is not recommended.
You can cut the Honda 600 or S600/S800 flare nuts off the steel
brake lines then install them onto your new 3/16" steel lines.
Finding the flare nuts in the Honda 600 pitch is difficult but I
hear someone in Japan made new ones for the S600 people.
I bought a Double Flaring tool many years ago from Sears and
recently used it to make hard lines for my Honda motorcycle using
some re-zinc flare nuts and new 3/16" line.

Wow, so I am not going crazy! I was just at the auto parts store wondering
why even their metric lines wouldn't thread into my proportioning valve.
Luckily I have not yet thrown away my old lines (although I did cut the long
one into four pieces to get it out of the car!). I will salvage the old
nuts and have a local brake and clutch shop flare the ends. Is what I need
referred to as a double flare?

Just a note on cleaning old brake fluid from your system. Fully immerse
the part or lines in clear water. Dot 3 and 4 brake fluid is made to absorb
water, and it will liquefy again by simply opening all parts of the cylinder
or line and letting it sit in water for a few hours then use compressed air
to force it out. Then rinse the insides with lacquer thinner and blow dry
with compressed air.
If your lines are rusting out try and keep them together when you remove
them as they are invaluable when making the correct bends.

Hemmings Motor News add. Called "Brake & Equipment Warehouse" at

or call 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX EXT.648. Rob said he could provide the Honda 600
brake lines and fittings. He said they also sleeve wheel and with stainless
steel at $50.00 a cylinder and as for the 10 x 1.25mm line end nuts he can
provide them for $1.50 each. They have the 3/16" line from 10 inches to 50
inch lines and longer coils with the ends fitted. So, if your looking for
new hard lines, Hoses, cylinders resleeved and rebuilt, they seem to have
the capability.
