timing issue?

Post by jpcropduster »

hello all. I recently replaced my ignition coil, condenser, and
points on my '71N600. It starts now, but (please excuse my lack of
car knowledge) when I accelerate, it seems to "bottom out" and I can't
go above 30mph. Anyone ever had this problem? Do the points need to
be adjusted? please help! I've been without my daily and only driver
for over a month now.

Did you properly gap your points when you put them on?

I thought so, but is there a standard way to do that, or is it just
a trial and error type thing?

You need a set of feeler gauges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feeler_gauge
You can pick up a set for around $5 at autozone, etc. I can't remember the
exact gap that needs to be between the points, but it's in the manual
somewhere. You also need to be certain to index it at a certain point of
the rotation.

Did you install new screws in the points or condencer? If the screws
protrude through the plate they will stop the vacuum advancer from
working because they are tightened against the 2nd plate.
Make sure the mechanical advancer is moving freely, if it's stuck,
don't plan on going far or fast.
Gap the points to .015" with the lobe (either side) at the high spot.
Then set the ignition timing which can be done easily with a timing
light or a static light. Set the points to open on the *F* mark of the
timing cover. There are notches on your lower fan pulley, you can put a
spot of White Out in the notch to make it easier to see. Honda
originally used red paint.

Hi Daily Driver;
If you go to the anzhonda600owners@yahoogroups.com in the text area there
is a fix for the breaker plate which may be part of your problem. There is
also an article on changing your cam chain that takes you through timing,
setting your points, adjusting the rocker arms and all the rest. What has
to happen is every part working in unison to achieve combustion in the
chamber at the right time. And just about everything can cause it to be off
the mark.
