I'm prepping the primered 600 of the three that I picked up at the
estate auction to put on the road. Today I had the mechanical advance
mechanism off to service it along with the breaker plate. After
cleaning all the parts and reassembling it all back together I was real
happy with the lack of slop (remember, I have three cars to use the
best parts from) and the smoothness. The original mechanical advance
was hard to move from the congealed grease on the center shaft so what
happened is the weights were really working to move it and wallowed out
the fingers that go into the weight arms.
The question I have is that when I went to tighten the advance
mechanism to the cam (the center 10mm bolt) I noticed that I can check
the cam chain slop. I'm able to rock the cam about a 64th of an inch or
2-3 degrees back and forth. To me, I'd guess that this is acceptable as
the pressure fed tension should take that right up. Am I right on this
assumption?? Thank you .. Frank
