Is it possible to tell from the motor number if it is a synchro or
non-synchro motor?
I've got two -
N600E-1026808
N600E-1019124
Both are probably from Sedans (no tach cable), and the second one has
the Y head and a strange cover on the back of the fan. (I was told it
came from Europe.)
Can I tell from this, or do I need to pull them apart?
Motor synchro on non-synchro?
Re: Motor synchro on non-synchro?
Both of the engine numbers you gave below have constant or non-synchro transmissions.
the first two numbers of the engine number 10 mean that they are non-synchro. If the first two numbers were 15 or 25 then they would be full synchro transmissions.
Both of your engines are from Sedans built in July 1970 for 1026808, and April 1970 for 1019124.

Re: Motor synchro on non-synchro?
As to the angle port head; angle port heads could be ordered from the parts catalog and were. But neither of your engines originally came with an angle port head. The last engine which had an angle port head is 1017730.

Re: Motor, non-synchro or non-synchro?
If you are building a race motor you should use the one with the
Hawaiian head, hopefully it still has the hot cam that goes with it.
If you were running it on the street and you had that head & cam with
also the larger carb and individual headers you would gain 10 extra
HP.
The non synch motor is favorable (in my opinion) for speed shifting
once you reinforce the differential. 3rd gear is lower than that of
the synchro and is better for hill climbing, I think 4th gear may be
same as the synchro type.
You can convert fairly easily to a full synchro trans if you have all
the parts. You will have to bust a fin out of the bottom case and
notch the upper case just a wee bit by 3rd gear - you will see.

Re: Motor synchro on non-synchro?
Hey Bill - I never thanked you for these details. Been busy and
haven't been around in a while.
Thank you!!!

Re: Motor, non-synchro or non-synchro?
Thanks Miles! I need to take a degree wheel and dial indicator and
check the cam out. From what I've read, it's just different duration
and timing - but no difference in lift. (I've got some hotter cams,
and the cam guy said that they were more performance than the Euro
honda cam, but I'd like to check for myself.)
My main goal is to get 3rd and 4th closer so I can be higher up the
RPM curve when I hit forth.
On the diff - you weld it up, right?
