stuck in the middle of a tuneup

Post by mterrens »

I have been replacing some tuneup items on my Coupe and now I am worse off than when I started.  So far I have...
- checked the position of the camshaft with the crank pulley at T - it's within a couple degrees of horizontal (less than 1/4 of a link)
- reset all the rocker gaps to .004
- replaced the condensor and points with new, and gapped to .014
- cleaned the NGK BR8ES plugs (discussed last month) and gapped to .032 as directed by an email from NGK
- replaced the air filter with a new one
- replaced the fuel filter with a new one
- replaced the 45 amp fuse with a new one, cleaned up the contacts at that fuse
Now the car cranks, but doesn't even try to fire.  I went back and checked all the gaps - they are where I put them.  I checked the fuel line at the carb with the key in the ON postition - gas is flowing.  Where do I go from here?
Thanks, Steve

Check if you have a spark coming out of the wires to the spark plugs
while cranking.

If no spark, check that you have the condenser wire in between the
proper washers and insulators. This very small eror has messed me up
several times!

Mark,
I think you're right about the condensor wire!  I redid the wiring and will reinstall tonight.
Here is how it is wired now .  Please let me know if this is right.
Thanks,
Steve

How did you have them Steve?
I asked this over at the Honda 600 Owners board but didn’t get an answer, how much spark should I see with these?
Mine is nice and blue but the spark itself is very thin and hard to see, I had to turn off my garage lights to see it well as I could barely see it with the lights on.
I am used to checking cars with a larger coil and those have a fatter spark.

First thing to do before anything else is turn on the key, open the
points and touch a small screw driver or nail between the points. You
should see a spark or hear a click. If you have power there then
check spark at the coil.
It looks like all the insulation is melting off your blue wire. Get
or make a new one.

Good catch Miles, maybe one of the wires was touching the point bracket and was shorting straight to ground?

Mike,
I am pretty sure I had both wires in the center when I tried to start the car.
No chance to reinstall the points or do any testing until tomorrow night at the earliest; I will pass along my findings.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
   Hope your car is running again by the time you get this msg.  Here are some things to check;
1)  With the ignition switch "on" and a voltmeter connected between the wiring into the points and engine ground,  you should be able to see the voltage on the meter alternate between 12 volts and 0 volts as you manually open and close the points.
2)  Did you keep your old parts?   If so,  try disconnecting both of the spark plug wires and connect it to your old spark plugs.  With the ignition switch "on", if you open and close the points rapidly (either manually or with a remote starter to the starter solenoid), you should see spark at the plug.  You will need to ground the metal threaded portion of the plug to the engine case.  If you see spark with your old plug,  check the new ones for spark.
3)  If you see the voltage alternating in (1) and you are not seeing spark in (2),  I would suspect the condensor.  Try using your old condensor or testing the new condensor (if you have the proper test equipment).
Although I have never experienced a new condensor which is bad,  I have had new spark plugs which did not work.  I am assuming your car did operate before you did the tuneup.
good luck,
Dale

Hey just an idea...have you checked for spark at the plug? then work backwards from there, check for grounds in the system, especially on the coil, check your battery for a good contact point, start from the point of origin after you check the ignition system. recheck what you have done electrically on the car, did it try to start in the beginning?
