Power Booster Removal

Post by Erik »

Howdy,
My Power Booster on my N600 is failing big time.
I've heard removing it from the system is the easiest least expensive way
to go.
How much more effort will it take to stop the little car without that system?
Have any of you heard of this being done before?
Thanks,
Erik

Hey Erik, I have read on the board that you can use an MC from an 83 civic and not use the power booster.  I have an 83civic MC coming this week from ebay, I will tell you if this is a fit.

I did it on a couple of my cars before I figured out how to rebuild them. Plan ahead for stops if you remove the booster. The disc brakes are only 7" in diameter. A correct working booster is about 150% better than not having one.

Miles is right, the booster helps significantly.
Mine failed, too, and I simply bypassed the booster by pulling the supply line off the booster and connecting it to where the booster went back into the MC. Brakes work, but as Miles says, plan ahead and push harder. I'm working up the courage to open it and see what can be done to fix mine.
A working booster is still the best and safest.

Hi the brake effectiveness wont change, surely it just increases the pedal pressure required to achieve the same braking effort. No servo standard on s800 just have to push like hell to stop quick.
You just need bigger leg muscles !!!!

Do you know what failed on your brake booster.  The problem I saw most frequently was a large rubber boot (the diaphragm) which used to pull off its booster plate.  Sometimes I was able to reattach it with an adhesive and sometimes I used to have to buy the assembly (back when Honda used to sell them). The part I was fixing was located in the large housing which faces toward the cabin of the car.
The way I would detect if the booster had failed (you also notice it in the braking action) is to let the car idle and then press the brake pedal.  If the RPMs dropped,  the brake booster was not providing boost.
good luck,
Dale

Re: Power Booster Removal s800 s600

The s800 and s600 stop just fine with out a booster. The parts catalog shows the Bendix brake booster as an option on the s800, but I have never seen one installed. I have owned and driven many s600 - 4 wheel drum brakes, no servo, aprox 10" diameter drums, stop excellent. Have also owned and driven 2 s800 MK1 with disc front brakes Dunlop type, stopped fine, no booster. s800 has normal size rotors like a real car, not like an n600 toy car with miniature rotors to fit inside their tiny wheels.
Remove the booster, and plan ahead - that's all there is.
A proper working booster feels just like power brakes but you can also push past the power point where it becomes hard again.
