New to the 600 Scene

I posted this on the anzhonda600owners forum as well... it seems like this one is used more... is any one more preferred than the other? I was thinking this forum was more engine-based, but it doesn't seem so...
Hey everyone. I've spent the last few couple of weeks reading through a bunch of old posts. Very cool stuff.
Reading through all of these posts makes me wonder how many of you folks are still out there (I hope there are still a bunch as I can use any help I can get). A friend's parents passed on their 1972 Z600 to me, with the hopes that I could make her run again. I was originally going to try to fully restore her, but I don't know how realistic it's going to be. I have a lot of things going for me (e.g. friend owns a body shop, I am half-mechanically inclined, and I like to get dirty).
Anyway, I just wanted to share some pics with you folks.

P.S. I spotted a Z600 in San Bruno, CA (USA) today. It's orange and is on the street. I'm guessing, but it looks like the guy also had a N600 under the covers. I think the owner's name was William. I left a note in his mailbox... yeah, I'm that desperate for friends locally in the 600 community.

Well I would do the most important part first... The motor, fuel lines, and gas tank, fuel filter.  With out a running motor the car is not worth much.  See if you can get it running,  you will see a list in the forums somewhere how to go about checking the motor and getting it to run..  If you can't find anything I am sure one of the guys here will let you know...
Congrates on the car, it does not look to bad from the pictures...
Where are you located? you might be able to get some local help.

There had to have been rust, you are missing your roof strips. I have a coupe that the roof was so rusty we welded and filled in the roof strips and I have seen several others that are smooth top cars. Look at the inside of the car around your tail lights and look around your lower rear fenders (quarters) stick a magnet on to see how thick the bondo is.
I have another parts coupe that is very rusty up top but the engine is excellent, parts parts parts !

I agree with you Miles--- I think that there might be some rust underneath. I hate cars with old bodywork on it. I did a quick check, and overall the car seems pretty rust-free. The roof channels are either a sign of prior rust, or someone liked the shaved look.

I'd sent this over to Miles, but thought posting this up might be good too:
HISTORY: The previous owner told me that he drove the car home one day, and saw that there was oil leaking. He started it a couple of times, but it kept leaking so he stopped it and let it sit for years. The repair shop took it in to fix it, and for some reason they yanked the gas tank, painted the car (along with filling the roof rails, spraying the interior black, etc.-- I am just missing a U.S. mirror, lower grille, some chrome, and the right foglight cover), and did whatever else they. The owner wasn't too happy about the bodywork and paint as he liked the original orange, and had the car towed back to his garage ~1997 where it has sat since.
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION: The transmission looks like it was sealed up "recently" (in the 90s after work was done on it) with high-temp orange sealant. I checked the oil, and the oil is oddly clean (although really thin-- likely from sitting)... almost as if the engine wasn't started after the oil was put in. Like I said, the gas tank is out. It has a little bit of corrosion/rust on it... it's not clean and shiny like a gas tank should be. I might need to coat it with something.
BRAKES: The brake system needs to be reworked... it's missing reservoir cap, and I'm pretty sure the brake fluid has absorbed water, which probably means the master cylinder needs a rebuild or at least some cleaning.
BTW, I am located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
