He has a 3-D scanner and printer which allows him to make the impossible to find parts needed for his cars.   While the 3-D printer is still a bit spendy for your home shop,   the scanner doesn't seem so bad in price at $3000.  Especially when you consider the amount of work needed to create a drawing of a part to give to a machinist.   This creates the CNC code which you can take down to the shop and have them make your part.  I'm not sure how many hours of CNC operation amounts to the $15,000 needed to buy the 3-D printer.

This is trick prototyping. It's been around for years. It wrights a "G" code program for the CNC machining center to follow. You can however do the same thing manually in only a little time you just need the measuring equipment :dial calipers, Mikes, Etc. I did a lot of proto typing for WLGore. They had one of those scanners and would bring us the part and the program so we could run it.
They are quite accurate but still need tweeking for holes and reliefs.

Dale that 3D scanner is a useful tool for a CNC machine shop.
I don't have one, but thought about it over the years.
Have seen them at tool shows and a couple local shops have them.
They are limited but have there uses.
I just measure and draw the part in CAD then create a G-code file from it. Pretty quick way and my part is ready to use.
For Jay it's great, he doesn't have to incorrectly measure the part and send the wrong dimensions to the machine shop.
He only needs to push a button and produce one plastic solidified part that he can try to put on his car.
But, he will still have to use the "error-prone" machine shop to get an accurate working part.

Jay has an S500 (or was it a S600).  Mark M. Told me a few years ago, at a Monterey car show, a stuntman had a 600 sedan bolted to a helmet (it spun when lifted).  Jay was there and called it a Mini.
