reverse gear troubles

We have replaced the reverse gear but still have problems. It doesn't go far enough into gear and will pop out. What do we do to fix it?
this is the last step to getting it on the road.

Jeanne, it sounds like you've got problems with the reverse shift fork shaft
in the shift plate or maybe the shift plate is bad - when you replaced the
reverse gear, the teeth go towards the engine and the shift fork installs
with the lock/alignment bolt to the outside of the engine - either of these
mistakes could cause this problem if the installation is not correct, but
after that, it's major tear down to get to the shift plate. Hope this helps.

Look at the shifter linkage and make sure the roll pin you are using isn't hitting the case when you shift to reverse. The shift rod travels into the engine farther while shifting in reverse. Most people will lose the roll pin and try replacing with a bolt or pin that is too long causing it to never select reverse all the way.

It seems to be we don't have the roll pin. What diameter and length do we need for that roll pin?

If your speaking of the split pin for the shift lever, then it is 8mm dia. and 18mm long.  NAPA had them last time I looked for a buck.
