Where did my idle go?

Post by roger white »

Has anyone seen my idle?
  I haven't run my 71' AN600 in a year so I pumped the fuel tank dry and pulled the bowl on the carb.
The carb still had some liquid "gas" in it.  I sprayed carb cleaner in bowl and through jets, reassembled and put in a gallon of gas with stabilizer in the tank.  Fired right up but will only run wtih 1/2 to full choke at fast idle. I let it warm up and it died when I pushed the choke in.  It "sneezed" twice before it died.  It was almost like it was back firing without ignition.
Does any one have any ideas.  I'm thinking the idle circuit in the carb may have gummed shut.
How do I check the idle shut off relay?
Thanks.

I have never seen an idle shut off relay.  You do have a solenoid on the side of the carb and from your description,  it is working.  The car would not run if the plunger in the solenoid did not retract.
Your idle circuit may have some deposits which are causing the problem you describe.  Can you set the idle speed to a higher rpm and have the engine continue to run?    And when you quickly depress the throttle,   does the engine respond and rev up?
Once the RPMs are up,  can you drive the car?  Does it have enough power to drive even though it does not idle correctly?
If you don't have enough power do drive the car,  here are some simple things to do;
1)  replace the spark plugs.  Gap them at 0.028 to 0.032 inches
2)  check/clean the points ..... where they make contact may have become a higher than normal resistance
3)  where the carb attaches to the engine (i.e. the intake manifold),  you don't want any air leaks in this area
4)  look in the air cleaner housing to make sure a critter has not taken up residence and left behind a bunch of debris
Since the car was running fine before it was stored,  I don't expect the problem to be very serious.
good luck,
Dale

Remove the idle stop solenoid, set it aside, and temporarily plug the hole with a golf tee to diagnose. I've seen many of these solenoids fail. Your engine will not idle when they do. If it idles fine with the golf tee in place you know what to do. Set up a tee time and go golfing!

Hi Roger;
    I had a similar problem with the carb on my Coupe.  It sits for much of the time both in museums and at home.  A friend of the group is Bill Silver, he is well versed in Honda bikes and even wrote a couple of books on them.  His assistance on this exact problem was invaluable.
    It seems the recombined fuels we are burning in our early 70's technology Carb is leaving a gooey mess on the jets.  Without pulling the carb completely apart and cleaning everything, you won't get it out.  Really, I too had pulled it down to where I thought I would clean everything.  But the center jets live in long casting holes that allow this mess to stay there and even with carb-cleaner pushed with compressed air it just doesn't do the job.
    So, pull it apart, and just when you think everything is out, look again.  Caution, don't remove the throttle assemblies as there are seals there that can be damaged resulting in a vacuum leak.
    End result, it acts like a carb again.
Bill

I've been having the opposite problem.  My Z will idle all day long, it will even rev up without any hesitation.  Sounds great.  Everyone says "stand back, he's going to take off".  My problems start when I let out the clutch.  My power seems to completely disappear and it will barely pull itself.  To keep it moving, you must push the clutch back in and wind it up again.  I've checked, timing, points, plugs, etc. etc. etc., numerous times without any success.  Nothing's causing excess drag (brakes, etc.) since I can push it by hand with someone in the vehicle holding the clutch down.  I've even towed it short distances with my garden tractor and right now the garden tractor will outrun it.  Regardless of what I do, it does not get any worse, it just never gets any better.
HELP!

I've run in to your problem too. I could push it with out a lot of difficulty but it wouldn't go far and power ran out. It turns out the calipers were stuck so yes your brakes are on. When you drive they heat up and then lock up. When you are pushing it they are probably cold and turn ok.

Nope, mine is not a brake problem.  Wish it was that simple.

it sounds like a clutch, differential, or transmission is stuck in two gears at once problem

No, it can be driven, just not very easily.  You can even shift gears.  It idles easily and rev great but when you start to move, the power disappears quickly.  When it starts to die, push the clutch back in and it will coast just as it did before this problem started.

I let it warm up and it died when I pushed the choke in.  It "sneezed" twice before it died.  It was almost like it was back firing without ignition.
