Not to second guess Soichiro but can the comb like rubber dampers found between the head fins be left off. Are they there for sound damping only or do they stop damaging fin vibration?
I would think the fins would dissipate heat better with the greater air flow. Never saw them on early Honda motorcycles.

Sound is vibration. The fins and heat dissipation were designed with the dampers. I don't recall selling many, if any, of the dampers. I do recall seeing plenty of gooy, swollen and otherwise funky dampers. The guys who rebuilt them for a living always put them back on. More over, the bean counters won't let the engineers put anything on the car that is not absolutely necessary. Besides, if you later decide the damper should be installed, it will require some effort. Hope this helps, Don Laughton Sent from my iPad
