Just incase you were wondering what the inside of your 40 year old gas tank might look like I've uploaded some pictures.
I dropped the tank today and dropped it off at a metal stripping company and will then take it to be powder coated.
If your car has sat for a long time you should probably do the same. nothing will ruin your day like a clogged fuel filter or even worse sucking up a bunch of rusty gas into your carb.
After getting my carb. rebuilt recently i just couldn't chance gumming it up so i decided to do it right and drop it completely and have it acid dipped.

Re: Rusty gas tank
Don't forget to seal it, I made that mistake with my first one.
I just got done doing my second one and I did the second one myself from start to finish. It took me a little more than a week to clean good but it looks better than the first one that I paid for to get done. Total price was about $100.00 and $50 of that was the sealer kit from Bill Hirsch. The other $50 was several gallons of Apple Cider Vinegar. The vinegar worked great and I recommend that anyone can do it. After I did the vinegar soak and rinse several time I then followed Bill Hirsch 3 step process.

Re: Rusty gas tank
I've heard mixed thoughts on sealing once fully cleaned of rust. I've heard stories of the sealant not binding to the inside of the tank and causing issues.
The place that did my tank didn't recommend sealing it and said the alcohol in the gas will keep it from rusting more and just to make sure to keep it filled when storing it.
I'd like to hear others thoughts though on the situation.
Thanks!

Re: Rusty gas tank
I did not seal my first tank and it leaks in like 3 spots. Didn't start until a month or so after I got the car all running. If I fill the tank completely, I will loose gas down to the seam, after that I loose a little from sloshing around while driving. On the second tank that I just did I found 2 pin holes that only leaked when I had the tank was filled with the vinegar and it was duct taped/sealed up. When it sat in the sun and expanded, the leaks showed up. I was able to get my tank as clean as your pics before I sealed it, so I will keep my finger crossed.
