Voltage Regulator

Can anyone give a description of the paths for each wire going to / from the voltage regulator?  In particular, I would like to determine from the plastic connector where each of the six wires go.
I have had what I believe is a faulty regulator and was getting readings of 16+ volts at the battery, higher when revving the engine.
The plastic connector is slightly warped now (not enough to prevent connecting) and one wire in particular has had some of the insulation melted off.
Any help would be appreciated.

Also, would the dash warning light go on if the voltage is too high (as well as too low)?

The sedan manual pages 17-20 through 17-30 give a fairly decent description of the circuits as well as adjustment of the regulator and troubleshooting.  The coupe manual probably has a similar section.  You can get the books at honda600coupe.com.  I think the dash light comes on only with low voltage.

Interesting about the warning light.   With both 2 'new' regulators, the charge warning light has lit up and yet I am measuring excessive voltage at the battery.

I think this is how these are wired.  The regulator provides a ground to light the charge light, perhaps see if the wiring to the light is picking up a ground somewhere else?
L (light) White/green stripe - provides ground to the charge light if necessary
A (?)     White                   - battery
E (earth) Black                  -ground and rotor ground
F (field)  White/red stripe    - power to rotor
N (stator) White/black stripe- stator
IG (ignition) Blue/yellow stripe - ignition

Thanks. �I think this will help alot.
It looks like� N (stator) White/black stripe- stator has melted pretty far, possible all the way to the stator. �have not taken the wire harness that far apart yet.

On the same site with the manuals, there are some technical service bulletins.  Bulletin #17002 towards the bottom of the document describes possible problems due to a lousy connection at the rectifier which can cause excessive current through the stator wire to the regulator.  Perhaps this also caused damage to the charge light relay and/or regulator relay.
I haven't tried one, (maybe someone who has can chime in...) but rockauto has a regulator listed for these for around $25.  The connection plug is different, I think it's for an early civic.  It looks like a generic solid-state regulator but you can find the pin diagram and convert it.

Have you opened the regulator up and checked out it's points/contacts? A regulator does (2) things. One magnetic switch connects the battery to the alternator/dynmo  and the other switch off and on to regulate charge or no charge. The dash light only tell you that there is enough voltage to to switch it off. It sounds to me like you have a incorrect test meter or the regulating points is stuck closed. You can move the points with a small plastic or wooden stick. You will see the light go on an off and you should see the voltage drop. If you have bad connections anywhere the resistance will rise and the voltage should go down. Ohms law. There will also be heat. If your regulating point is stuck closed that will also raise the current and cause heat. The rectifier just scraps the reverse phase of the AC coming from the generator. If you put a good meter on its output to ground you should only see DC voltage. If one of the diodes is bad you should see nothing. To the rectifier is not an issue except for bad connections which could add resistance and result in heat.

Greetings.  I have most of the wire harness unraveled whilst removing the burnt wire white/bl from regulator to brushes.  This weekend is looking like a wiring one!
I don't want to 'under' or 'over' wire them.
What gauge wire would be recommended for the white/bl wire from regulator to brushes?
What gauge wire would be recommended for the 3 wires from coils (stator) to rectifier?
What gauge wire would be recommended for the wire from rectifier to regulator?

I think the wire to brushes is white with red stripe. White with black stripe goes to stator. Make sure you test your rectifier, stator and rotor before you rewire the whole thing.
