I have to agree with Dave K, his statements on a RX-7 rim with a 50 series
(low profile) tire is correct. Measuring the distance from the center of
the axel to the outer edge of the tire there is about a 1/2 inch difference
all the way around. The RX-7 rim I show in my picture album is an aluminum
rim weighing about a pound more than a standard Honda 600 steel rim. The
tire on the other hand was quite a bit heaver than 10in tires. Although we
found a tire that was very close to the 10in tire weight I can not remember
which one it was. As to wheel bearing wear, the weight of the rim and tire
have little to do with the bearings going out and the RX-7 rim is for a
front wheel drive vehicle so the dynamics are the same. But the tread to
road is different and a lose or a marginal set of front bearings will show
up very quickly. After market bearings can replace factory warn bearings
on the front axels for about $10.00 a bearing, - front wheel bearing
requires 2 each side #6305 which are sealed lubrication bearings. Then
tighten the castle nut with 160+ pounds Feet of torque. Note, most may
have some wear in the housing where the bearing seats causing some erratic
behavior in the front wheels, Like they seem loose?

Hi Ian;
The wear your speaking of is because the rim that may have been used
was a standard RX-7 Rim, which is much to heavy and really has to be the
lightest wheel you can find. Plus they must be balanced. You know the
after market 10in. rim's like Shelby and Cosmic are lighter but wider than
the factory steel rims lending to better handling as well as less unsprung
weight. The closer to the original weight of the steel rim with a 10in tire
the better off you will be. This is basic geometry folks, and if the wheel
is not balanced then your struts will go just as they will with out of
balance 10in tires.
