how do I check my stator?

Post by xjacksonx3 »

I have a 71/72 honda 600 coupe and I need to know how to check the
stator. My shop manual says to disconnect the three white wires from
the stator and check the amount of voltage being produced. Where
exactly should I attach my ohmmeter leads to do that? My manual talks
about connecting the ohmmeter leads to the rotor slip rings but I
don't know what those look like. Also, is there any way to check a
stator while it's out of the car? I have one in and one out and am
trying to determine if they're bad or good. Thanks for any help
anyone can give me.

>Hello, the slip-rings are the 2 copper rings that are on the
flywheel,(the carbon brushes ride against them),there should be
continuity beteen the rings, but not the cast wheel itself, check
between each ring and the wheel,if theres a connection theres a
short. If there is no continuity between each ring, theres an open,
(both bad) The stator windings need continuity between any 2 at a
time(Check all),also check each (white lead) against the body of the
stator there shouldn't be a reading (check all three) I don,t know
of any voltage checks. (check 3 white stator wires were they enter
the field windings on the stator,(maybe broken there),also clean all
connections,that,s usually the problem!! riceburner.

As I do not know what your level of electrical experience is I am going to
brake this down a bit more.
Riceburner said it correctly, but, if your confused, the stator has the 4
wires coming from it, 3 white and one white with a black stripe. The
flywheel unit is the rotor unit of the Generator. As riceburner said the
copper rings (on the outside of the flywheel) is split into two connections.
Place your red lead on one and black on the other from your multi tester
(with the tester in the ohm range) and they should read as connected. If
there is no reading then it is open, which means its a bad unit. Then with
your red lead on just one of the rings, touch the black lead to the flywheel
itself, if you get a reading then the unit is bad, no reading means it is a
good unit. With your tester in the same range as before, just place your
red lead on anyone of the white leads to your stator and touch the black
lead to each of the others checking to see if there is a reading, this will
included the white with black stripe wire. If all have a reading then the
wires are all connected to one another in the windings. Now touch the black
lead to the metal on the inside of the windings (it will be the only part
not covered with insulation) if there is no reading then the stator is good.
If you get a reading here also, then the stator is shorted and you will need
a new one.
As Riceburner said, clean all connections, both ends. Often corrosion will
keep electrical connections from working as intended.
Attached is the parts manual pages for the generator.

Thank you Bill and Riceburner. This is exactly the level of detail I
needed. I won't be able to work on the little car until Thanksgiving
weekend and then hopefully these instructions will help me fix the
problem. I actually need to sell this car but don't feel right doing
that until this is fixed. Thanks again.

Just wanted to thank Bill and Riceburner again. We successfully
replaced the stator in our 600 coupe last weekend and it fixed the
problem we were having (the charge light staying lit). The only real
trouble we ran into was removing the generator rotor unit. We had the
rotor remover but not the rotor holder so it took some fanagling. But
all is well. We had planned to sell this little car when we finished
this repair but we've changed our minds. It's just too cute to let go.
Thanks again.
