Idle

Hi,
My '71 N600 when I first start it up takes a long time
before it will idle without the choke pulled out. Is
this normal? I can speed up the idle to where it will
run, but then when engine gets warm it is way too
fast.
That spring loaded choke sucks too, can't pull it out
and leave it, have to hold it.

Hi Greg;
There is an early and late choke cable. The early cable has a chrome
cap on the dash, with a black plastic knob. The later have a black plastic
cap on the dash and a black plastic knob. The later can be tightened for
adjustment. The earlier has to be removed, and there is a small square notch
you will see on the threads. The notch is supposed to have some material in
it to allow the cable to be pulled and stay out until pushed in.
What you don't want to do is tighten the plastic nut under the dash. It
will break the threaded shaft on the cable and then there will be no
correcting the problem.
What to do, loosen the plastic nut on the early choke cable and look to
see if the notch is plugged or has something in it to keep the cable pulled
out. (you don't have to pull the cable all the way out) If not then try a
small plastic piece the same size as the hole and just slightly higher. Put
it back together and see if it works. If to tight then make it a bit
lower....
For the later cable tighten the black cap a bit and the knob should stay
our.
In all cases when your tightening a plastic nut always take care not to
strip or break the threads.

I seem to have had a similar problem and it turned out to be a loose
jet. The O ring was warn, old and it seemed to help when I changed it.
They are cold blooded engines anyway, but I would start with the Carb and
make sure the heat raiser to the air box is connected.
