looking for tips on carburetor set-up.The mark on side of carb base is
where float gauge goes but is it on gasket surface or on top of edge
the pictures look like it's on edge.

Hi Tye;
When looking at the float set up, they should be parallel with the carb
base, AND, the tung pushing on the needle valve should be pushing in on the
spring loaded center pin (on the needle) so it is seating and stopping the
flow of fuel. If the center pin in the needle is all the way in then the
needle will be seating long before the float bowl is full. The floats will
never reach parallel with the base of the carb and your carb will run out of
fuel starving the engine causing it to cough and stop.
So the important thing to remember is to clean the tip of the needle and
it's seat, make sure the tung on the float is pushing on the center pin in
the needle and that the floats are parallel with the base when this happens.

If you are using a used needle and seat, give me a call. I will polish both seating surfaces for you. I just did this on the sedan you rode in. I also wrapped a layer of teflon tape around the tired o-rings on all the jets that had them. it keeps them from leaking as well
