I can get my little honda coupe to start, sometimes I can hardly get it
to idle even at full pedal. and then sometimes the car will rev up for
a while and then will cough and die, any ideas.

It sounds like ignition/timing but could also be the solenoid on the side of your carb. The easiest is the solenoid, remove it and touch the leads to the battery. If the pin pulls in then it works. Go to the static timing, your owners manual has the how-to's.
If that doesn't help then you may be starving for gas, pull the fuel line from the carb and crank the engine to see if it will fill a small jar (when you have the gas in the jar look for Dust Rust it comes from a rusted out tank). The pump should sound like it is going to town, if not there may be a fuel filter problem. Trace the fuel line and look for kinks from a rock hitting the line.
