Jeff;
     The tach drive does have a seal, but normally the leak comes from inside the cable.   One way of sealing the cable is shrink wrap (like you use for electrical wires.   Then back it out and see if the rubber seal is on the inside of the cable.  Lots are lost because of an owner removing the cable and pulling on the cable housing causing the seal to come off, then when they put it back in the seal pops out and is lost (parts book #17).   So you are really looking for two seals, one in the housing and one on the cable.

Starter for 72 Honda coupe

Post by PTImchugh »

Does anyone know where I might get a new "starter" for my 1972 HOnda Coupe?  I'm told by the mechanic that my starter "is not engaging the fly-wheel" whatever that means.  It will cost me a fortune to have them rebuild it, and thought maybe you guys could find me a new or used one that works.   Thanks!

What I recently did for my 1971 N600 was buy brushes and bushings on
eBay, and a new solenoid at one of the local chain auto parts stores,
and had a local starter repair shop check it out and install the
bushings and brushes. The solenoid had fixed that actual immediate
problem, but the brushes were well worn and there was wobble when it
turned. Cost me about $100 total for parts and labor. I was surprised
that the solenoid was available at next-day delivery for about $25 at
the local parts place. Might be the only N600 part they could get.
Good luck.

Hi Kathy,
   It sounds like you may have a problem with your starter solenoid.  I noticed someone else on here mentioned being able to buy a solenoid.... find out from him the store, the part's brand, and the part number.
   You might check with your mechanic and find out if the small wire which slides onto the starter's solenoid was showing 12 volts when the ignition switch was turned to the "start" position.  I have also seen defective ignition switches which do not send the voltage to the starter solenoid when the switch is in the "start" position.
   If you cannot locate a starter solenoid,  they can be rebuilt if you are mechanically inclined.  The solenoid will usually fail because the large copper contacts inside the solenoid become pitted and dirty.  They can be cleaned with a file / wire brush / steel wool.
good luck,
Dale
